Does One Of The Jonas Brothers Have Diabetes

Entertainer Nick Jonas Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor And Actor Victor Garber Are Three Public Figures Who Have Spoken Out About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic health condition in which your body can’t produce insulin, a key hormone that converts glucose into energy. The condition typically strikes during childhood, but it can develop at any age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . It affects nearly 1.6 million people in the United States alone, per estimates from the American Diabetes Association — and some of those people happen to be celebrities.

“The awareness celebrities can bring to type 1 diabetes can make a big impact on the type 1 diabetes community as a whole,” says Brittany Poulson RDN, a certified diabetes care and education specialist based in Grantsville, Utah.

For example, a celebrity sharing details of his or her experience can shine a spotlight on some lesser-known aspects of the disease. “Sometimes parents don’t know the signs and symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst and frequent urination,” Poulson says. Knowing the facts can help you get a diagnosis sooner, enabling you to get the care you need to manage diabetes before it gets out of control, she adds.

“By talking openly about how they manage type 1 diabetes and its challenges while pursuing careers and achieving lifelong goals, celebrity ambassadors and type 1 diabetes role models can inspire other adults and children,” Dr. Kowalski continues. “With proper management and determination, they, too, can achieve their dreams.”

Nick Jonas Was Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes 14 Years Ago And Has Struggled With His Health For Years Behind

Nick Jonas, 27, is speaking out about living as a diabetic. “14 years ago this month I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes,” Nick captioned a selfie on his Instagram account on Friday, Nov. 1. “This experience has shaped how I approach my health – working out, eating well, and always thinking about my blood sugar and insulin needs. You can’t always see what goes into managing an invisible illness, and Type 1 diabetes can feel lonely and isolating,” he continued.

Nick was diagnosed with the condition in 2005, the same year he formed the Jonas Brothers along with his older siblings Kevin, 31, and Joe, 30. Type 1 diabetes is a condition that occurs when the human body doesn’t produce enough insulin, which is key to regulating sugar levels, metabolism and much more. The disease is common in children and teens who were born with the condition, including Nick who was diagnosed at just 13. The condition varies drastically from Type 2 diabetes which is largely influenced by lifestyle factors, such as diet and lack of exercise.

From innovations in islet isolation and transplant procedures to advances in cell biology and immunology, the DRI is now harnessing the power of emerging technologies to develop new cell-based therapies to restore insulin production. For the millions of families already affected by diabetes who are looking to the world of science for answers, the Diabetes Research Institute is the best hope for a cure.

In New Documentary Jonas Brothers Reveal The First Signs Of Nick’s Diabetes They Noticed

Diabetes can be scary not only for the person with the diagnosis, but their loved ones as well. In their new documentary “Chasing Happiness,” the Jonas brothers, as well as their parents and manager, opened up about the concerning symptoms they noticed that eventually led to Nick’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2005 at age 13.

The documentary, released on Amazon Prime June 4, chronicles the musical trio’s life story. While the brothers were on tour in 2005, that’s when they saw the first sign something was different about Nick. As dad Kevin Sr. explained, the band members said Nick was starting to get more moody, direct and agitated.

Greg Garbowsky, the Jonas brothers’ former manager, said while on the road, Nick frequently demanded they pull over so he could get pizza and diet Coke.

“He would say, ‘I need it,’” Garbowsky said.

Kevin said Nick would get a massive Big Gulp soda from 7-11 every time they stopped. Band members were concerned that he was so thirsty — Garbowsky said they’d have to pull the car over, Nick would get out, run into the woods to pee, then get back in the car and they’d have to stop again two miles later.

“We’d stop every 15 minutes because Nick really had to pee,” Joe said. “It was like a running joke.”

“I went to my parents’ house crying and said something’s wrong with Nick, we have to bring him to the doctor,” Joe said.

Nick Jonas Says He Was Very Close To Coma Before He Was Diagnosed With Diabetes

Nick diabetes

opened up about the time he felt “very close to coma”, explaining how his body was struggling in the days before being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Years back when the singer was just 13, Nick lost a considerable amount of weight and developed an unending desire for sweet beverages.

After that his blood sugar levels were nine times higher than normal. “I was very close to coma. Like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital,” People quoted Jonas as saying.

“I kept asking my parents — am I going to be okay? I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do. I was very scared — it’s a big life change,” the 27-year-old continued.

However, after all the panic, the singer understood that his problem was “manageable” and said, “I found out very quickly it’s a very manageable disease. As long as you’re really diligent.” Today, as he is capable of managing his diabetes, Jonas opened up about his past so that his fans learn to “prioritise a healthy life”.

“You must go see your doctor and get your check-ups and make sure you’re in the healthiest space you can be in because it’s going to make every aspect of your life better,” he said.

Owens: What You Should Know About That Nick Jonas Super Bowl Ad From A Diabetic

A few nights ago, I watched in discontentment as Nick Jonas appeared in a Super Bowl ad to scoff at the idea of diabetics using finger sticks.

“People with diabetes are still pricking their finger? What?” he exclaimed.

Jonas, known for his time in the Jonas Brothers band, is a Type 1 diabetic himself. In this ad, he was promoting the Dexcom G6, a continuous glucose monitoring system that helps diabetics keep track of their blood sugar.

Type 1 diabetes, commonly known as “juvenile diabetes,” is a chronic condition that affects more than 1.5 million people in America, according to the American Diabetes Association. Simply put, this chronic condition causes the body to stop naturally producing insulin. As a result, people who live with Type 1 diabetes must carefully monitor their blood sugar to avoid serious health complications.

Dexcom helps diabetics—both Type 1 and Type 2—do just that. The device is good for 10 days at a time and sends blood sugar readings to the user’s mobile phone in real time. When users’ blood sugar reads as too high or too low, Dexcom activates an alert to their phone.

So, what’s the problem with a Super Bowl ad promoting this life-saving technology?

Their Dad Quit His Pastor Job Because Of Pressures After The Bands Success

The Jonas Brothers’ dad, Kevin Jonas Sr., was a Christian pastor for many years while also pursuing music producing and, eventually, managing his sons as a side business. However, once the Jonas Brothers were headed on a secular, rather than religious, musical path, Jonas Sr. felt pressure from his church and eventually quit.

Kevins Daughters Hadnt Seen Him Perform With Their Uncles Until Recently

Kevin and Danielle have two daughters. Alena Rose was born in February 2014 and Valentina Angelina was in October 2016. Because they were born after the Jonas Brothers split up, the girls only recently become aware that their dad and their uncles were previously in a band together.

“This is the first time my girls are watching me perform,” Kevin said to the crowd at a recent record release concert for fans.

Joe and wife Sophie Turner are the latest parents to add to the Jonas family. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Willa, on July 27. So far, they are “adapting well to being first-time parents,” an insider told Life & Style. “They haven’t been getting much sleep but know it’s all part of the process.”

Despite the lack of sleep with a newborn in the house, they are “totally obsessed with their new bundle of joy,” the source said, adding they “can’t stop doting” on their baby girl.

“Joe and Sophie haven’t introduced their daughter to the rest of the family yet, but Nick and Priyanka and the Jonas brothers have all FaceTimed to see the baby and congratulate them! The whole family is thrilled for them,” the insider shared, explaining they are practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Kevin and his wife Danielle Jonas were the first couple to give the Jonas’ their first grandchild. The proud parents welcomed their daughter Alena in 2014 and later had another little girl, Valentina, in 2016. With three girls in the family, the Jonas Sisters might be on the radio in 2040!

Nick Was Dangerously Skinny Before Being Diagnosed With Diabetes

Nick was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes early on during the Jonas Brothers’ rise to fame. Signs that something might be wrong were his having to pee constantly and unusual diet habits. He was super skinny to the point that his brothers thought he looked skeletal. He now relies on an insulin pump to maintain his blood sugar.

Nick Jonas suffered a serious health scare in the days leading up to his diabetes diagnosis at age 13.

“I was very close to a coma,” he told Cigar Aficionado . “Like a day away, if I hadn’t gone to the hospital.”

The Jonas Brothers singer, now 27, revealed doctors found out his blood sugar was nine times higher than normal and diagnosed him with type 1 diabetes. Those diagnosed with the inexorable autoimmune disease stop producing insulin.

“I kept asking my parents — am I going to be okay?” he said. “I was just so concerned that it was going to limit my ability to do all the things I wanted to do. I was very scared — it’s a big life change.”

Jonas reportedly craved a lot of soda and sugary drinks leading up to his hospitalization.

In 2015, the pop star lashed out at Crossfit CEO Greg Glassman for mocking a Coca-Cola campaign by Photoshopping the phrase “Open diabetes” to an ad.

“This is not cool,”. “Please know and understand the difference between type one and type diabetes before making ignorant comments.”

He added, “Sensitivity to all diseases, and proper education on the cause and day to day battle is important.”

Jonas told Cigar Aficionado he has learned to live with the “manageable” disease “as long as you’re really diligent.”

Thanks To His Diabetes Nonprofit Nick Jonas Is A Disney Hero

Nick Jonas is no stranger to Disney. After all, he along with his brothers appeared in the Disney Channel movies “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” . But it was his co-founding a diabetes nonprofit that won him the 2017 Disney Hero Award .

Beyond Type 1, Jonas’ advocacy group, has two major goals: educating the public about diabetes and supporting research to finding a cure. “There were times I felt misunderstood by people who hadn’t been educated about what the actual deal was with Type 1 diabetes,” Jonas said. “Instead of getting frustrated I try and find a way to pivot and think about how to educate people both on a global platform and on a smaller scale as well.”

Besides education and research, Beyond Type 1 is unique because of its social media presence. “I think traditionally the internet has been used as an educational tool for many diseases and things of that nature, but in regards to Type 1 diabetes , this is the first time social media has really been a defining factor in the outreach and the presence of a non-profit” . In fact, just three years after its creation, Beyond Type 1 had almost 2 million followers. “To have made the impact we have and in such a short amount of time, is something I’m really proud of,” Jonas said.

When Did The Jonas Brothers Release A Little Bit Longer

2008A Little Bit Longer/ReleasedIt was officially released on September 30, 2008. The official music video for “Lovebug” premiered on the Disney Channel on October 19, 2008. The album’s third and final single “Tonight”. “A Little Bit Longer” was released on August 5, 2008 as the first promotional single.

Nick Jonas And His Brothers Form A Diabetes Foundation

From the beginning, Kevin and Joe Jonas were by their little brother Nick’s side both for the fame of being the Jonas Brothers and the challenges of Nick’s type 1 diabetes. So it’s not surprising that the three came together again to form Change for the Children, a foundation designed to both raise awareness about diabetes and funds for research .

“We believed that young people can make a huge difference in the world around us,” Jonas told Variety. “We want to help our fans and every young person out there understand that they too can work to change the future for the better.” To that end, Jonas also began a campaign with Bayer Diabetes Care called Nick’s Simple Wins, through which, like his song “A Little Bit Longer,” he tried to offer encouragement for his fellow diabetics.

“When I was talking to them about my day-to-day life with diabetes, the thing that came up was about the importance and about the everyday victories that add up to a great day, a great month, a great year, whatever it may be with diabetes,” Jonas said . “It’s that small win at a time that adds up to the big picture.” Beyond their philanthropic outreaches, the Jonas Brothers also urged their fans to support such groups as fellow diabetes awareness group D-Vision .

Nick Jonas Establishes A Website To Distribute Insulin

With the creation of his nonprofit Beyond Type 1, Nick Jonas tackled another issue facing diabetics: the cost of insulin. In an interview with ABC News, Jonas said that the way the health care system is structured right now “allows people to slip through the cracks.” With that in mind, he along with Beyond Type 1, the NAACP, Feeding America, the American Diabetes Association, and JDRF launched GetInsulin.org, a search engine designed to help people find affordable insulin in their area.

Available in English and Spanish, the website offers information on health insurance , Manufacturer Patient Assistance Programs , Copay Cards, and Cash Payment Programs . In addition, it explains the basic differences between the various types of insulin, which range from long-acting to rapid-acting. And through its partnership with Feeding America, GetInsulin.org allows visitors to search for food banks.

Although Jonas sees the site as “an important tool,” he also told ABC News that insulin prices are too high, a problem that “shouldn’t be a political issue, but rather a human rights issue.” He also warned against the practice of taking insulin less often or in smaller amounts to stretch out one’s supply: “Together, we must get the word out: rationing insulin is never safe.” Additionally, GetInsulin.org emphasizes insulin’s importance by stating that, “Insulin is life support — we all need it to stay alive, as much as we need oxygen, water, and food to eat.”

The father of the Jonas Brothers has revealed he is battling colon cancer. Speaking to NBC Charlotte‘s Michelle Boudin, Kevin Jonas Sr. praised his sons for their support as he opened up about his diagnosis, which he discovered in March. Recalling the moment he told his children, the 52-year-old said: “They were shaken. Frankie came home from school, Nick came from L.A., Joe flew directly from Japan… They cancelled their schedules, moved important things.” Kevin is a proud father to four sons – Kevin, Joe, Nick and Frankie – all of whom he shares with wife Denise Miller-Jonas.

Nick Jonas’ Super Bowl Ad Creates National Attention

Theresa May and 5 other inspirational people with diabetes ...

One of the downsides of celebrity is, despite your intentions, not everything you do will be accepted by the public. Case in point, Nick Jonas’ commercial for the Dexcom G6 CGM , a device that allows diabetics to monitor their blood sugar levels on their cell phone .

This 30-second ad, which ran during the 2021 Super Bowl, features Jonas praising technological advancements before saying in a critical tone, “And people with diabetes are still pricking their fingers?” . While the purpose of the ad was to showcase CGM devices, the TV spot did not sit well with some viewers. “We don’t need an ad telling us ‘finger sticks are a thing of the past’ when most can’t even afford test strips,” said Kasie Tresback, who, like Jonas, has type 1 diabetes and felt him being paid to do the commercial meant he wasn’t a legitimate advocate .

However, others found the Dexcom ad inspirational. “I think ads like the Nick Jonas one bring important attention to this horrible disease that our families live with every day,” said Tracy Capaul, a mother whose son is diabetic . “So many people in today’s society, even in 2021, still believe diabetes is your great aunt’s disease where you just can’t eat sugar. I hope everyone gets to see that you can still do whatever you want while living with this disease, but it’s something that definitely can’t be ignored.”

Kevin Became An Entrepreneur During The Bands Hiatus

After the Jonas Brothers split, Kevin moved on and into business. He started The Blu Market, which is described as an “influencer marketing company.”

“I’ve always had a passion for the tech industry and I like to help build interesting products,” Kevin told Forbes in 2016. “Being in a band is very much like a startup.”

He Had A Song On Broadway’s Equity Fights Aids Album

Nick wrote a song called “Joy To The World ,” and was selected to appear on the 2002 annual Broadway Equity Fights AIDS album, Broadway’s Greatest Gifts: Carol for a Cure Vol. 4. Nick recorded the song with backing vocals from the Beauty and the Beast cast.

What Nick Jonas’ Life With Diabetes Is Really Like

Tracey Johnson

Nick Jonas has lived with type 1 diabetes for more than a decade. After revealing his diagnosis to the public in 2007, the third youngest Jonas brother has advocated for millions of people who are also living with the condition.

In addition to co-founding Beyond Type 1, an organization dedicate to “uniting the global diabetes community and providing solutions to improve lives today,” Jonas has thrown his weight behind the cause wholeheartedly. Recently, he taped a new commercial for Dexcom. The company provides a smart monitoring system that has changed the way people manage their glucose levels. In the Super Bowl ad for said device, Jonas first talks about how technology has revolutionized everything, yet most diabetics still stick their fingers to test their blood and monitor glucose levels themselves. “Finally, technology that makes it easier to manage diabetes,” he concludes in the commercial.

Jonas has 15 years’ experience managing type 1 diabetes, as he was only 13 years old when he was first diagnosed. So what is life really like for the icon whose net worth allegedly amounts to an estimated $50 million? And how does it affect those around him?
