What Causes Unintentional Weight Loss In Diabetes
While intentional weight loss in people with diabetes is usually a goodthing, unintentional weight loss is not. If blood sugars are very high, patients with diabetes tend to urinate a lot, and this results indehydration as a possible cause of weight loss. Also, muscle breakdown canoccur if sugars are too high, causing an unhealthy weight loss. Actually, many patients with diabetes present for the first time to their doctor’soffice because of unexplained loss of weight. In addition to diabetes, thereare other concerning causes of unexpected weight loss which should beexplored such as thyroid disease and cancers.
In summary, a supervised attempt to lose weight in people who can exercisewithout risk is usually of benefit. However in certain cases such as ifblood sugars are too high or too low or if heart disease is present, it canbe dangerous. This is why all exercise and weight loss programs should bestarted only after discussion with a physician. Any unexplained weight loss,in patients with or without known diabetes may be a sign of high bloodsugars or another serious illness. It is absolutely necessary to see aphysician and undergo a complete evaluation in these cases.
What Can I Do About Insulin Resistance
There are a number of factors that can lead to insulin resistance including diet, genetics and weight.
The most exciting thing about insulin resistance is it can be delayed and/or prevented. Dietary changes, physical activity and even some medications can be powerful tools to help reduce both blood sugar and insulin levels.

Up The Ante On Diet + Exercise
The most basic answers are adjusting your diet and exercise. Talk to your doctor and to a nutrition specialist about a food plan that takes the insulin effects into account. Work a bit more activity or exercise into each day. Sometimes, your insulin dosage should be adjusted when exercising.
Dont self-adjust the dosage or timing of your insulin to accommodate eating more calories. You can end up gaining more weight. However, its good to self-adjust insulin for the purpose of fine tuning the dosage. Of course, you want to keep your doctor informed and continually work on good diet and exercise habits.

Causes Of Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin. This means glucose stays in the blood and isn’t used as fuel for energy.
Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity and tends to be diagnosed in older people. Due to increased obesity, type 2 diabetes is now being seen in young people and all ages. It’s far more common than type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes And Weight Loss
People who have type 1 diabetes may experience weight loss. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin. Because of this, the sugar cannot enter body cells. When the body does not have sugar for energy it starts using fat for energy. And if the body uses fat from body muscles it results in weight loss. If you are losing weight suddenly, You should consult to doctor immediately.
So, these are the causes why our weight fluctuates in diabetes.
Don’t Miss: How To Deal With High Blood Sugar
It Starts With Finding A Way To Eat Fewer Calories Than You Need
A calorie is a unit of energy, which is in the food and drink we consume. Your body uses energy for everything we do from breathing and sleeping to exercising. When you eat, youre replacing the energy youve used, which helps you to maintain a healthy weight.
As a general guide, government recommendations are that men need around 2,500kcal a day to maintain a healthy weight, and women need around 2,000kcal a day. But most people need different amounts of calories based on how their bodies work, how active they are and any weight management goals.
Weve put together some 7-day meal plans to help you lose weight. They’re all clinically approved, nutritionally balanced, calorie and carb counted, and can help if you want to lose weight:
Evidence shows that the best approach is the one that youre likely to stick to. So the key is to find a plan that you enjoy and fits in with the rest of your life. Everyones different and what works for some may not for others.
Track Your Progress With A Weekly Weigh
The only way to know youre gaining weight is to weigh yourself. A weekly weigh-in can track your progress and help you modify your current eating routine, as needed.
If youre taking in enough calories, you should start to see an increase of about one pound in one weeks time. Target a one- to two-pound weekly increase until you reach your goal weight.

Does Diabetes Cause Or Prevent Weight Loss
In most cases, weight loss is high on the list of ways to prevent and manage diabetes. Losing weight improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of high blood pressure, maintains blood glucose levels, cuts insulin resistance, and more. But occasionally, primarily in cases of Type 1 diabetes, weight loss can be unexpected, abnormal, and a cause for concern. Fortunately, knowing how diabetes can cause weight loss, what to look for, and when to see a healthcare provider can go a long way in managing the disease and staying healthy.
Monitoring Blood Glucose Levels
If you have type 2 diabetes, your GP or diabetes care team will need to take a reading of your blood glucose level about every two to six months.
This will show how stable your glucose levels have been in the recent past and how well your treatment plan is working.
The HbA1c test is used to measure blood glucose levels over the previous two to three months.
HbA1c is a form of haemoglobin, the chemical that carries oxygen in red blood cells, which also has glucose attached to it.
A high HbA1c level means that your blood glucose level has been consistently high over recent weeks, and your diabetes treatment plan may need to be changed.
Your diabetes care team can help you set a target HbA1c level to aim for. This will usually be less than 53 mmol/mol or individualised as agreed with your diabetes team.

Obesity And Insulin Resistance
Insulin sensitivity fluctuation occurs across the natural life cycle. For example, insulin resistance is noticed during puberty, in pregnancy, and during the aging process.25 In addition, lifestyle variations, such as increased carbohydrate intake and increased physical activity, are associated with insulin sensitivity fluctuations.10 Obesity is considered the most important factor in the development of metabolic diseases. Adipose tissue affects metabolism by secreting hormones, glycerol, and other substances including leptin, cytokines, adiponectin, and proinflammatory substances, and by releasing NEFAs. In obese individuals, the secretion of these substances will be increased.25
The cornerstone factor affecting insulin insensitivity is the release of NEFAs. Increased release of NEFAs is observed in type 2 diabetes and in obesity, and it is associated with insulin resistance in both conditions.26 Shortly after an acute increase of plasma NEFA levels in humans, insulin resistance starts to develop. Conversely, when the level of plasma NEFA decreases, as in the case with antilipolytic agent use, peripheral insulin uptake and glucose monitoring will be improved.27
Furthermore, abdominal fat is considered more lipolytic than subcutaneous fat, and it also does not respond easily to the antilipolytic action of insulin, which makes intra-abdominal fat more important in causing insulin resistance, and thus diabetes.27,28
You Think That Because You Exercised You Can Eat Dessert
Remedy: Exercise, but refrain from eating the dessert unless youve included it in your calorie and carb budget. Try to satisfy your sweet tooth in a way thats low or no calorie, and fits within your carb goal.
Managing diabetes well means controlling your blood sugar by balancing what you eat and drink with physical activity and any diabetes medication you take. There are certain trade-offs you can make when it comes to balancing blood sugar. For example, if you want to have a cookie or another sweet for dessert, Segura suggests keeping the prior meal starch-free. But if your overall goal is to decrease calories and lose weight, then having that dessert isnt necessarily the best choice, Powers notes. This is because exercise is unlikely to offset the amount of calories in the dessert. If you look at how many calories you expend when walking a mile its not a lot of calories, says Powers.
Remedying these obstacles to weight loss may not solve all of your problems, but it can help you make progress. If youre still having trouble shedding pounds or maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor or a CDCES about adjusting your plan. Some people may need more significant weight loss interventions and support to achieve their goals.

Uncontrolled Diabetes Can Cause You To Lose Muscle
When blood sugar levels are very high, they can cause muscle breakdown. Losing muscles is unhealthy weight loss.
While there is still more to be investigated on the subject, studies suggest that this is due to changes in two proteins: WWP1 and KLF15.
High blood sugar levels contribute to a reduction in WWP1 and an increase in KLF15, leading to the decrease in muscle mass induced by diabetes.
While this is not to say that diabetes doesnt allow you to build muscle, it could make the process difficult. In any case, both types of diabetics must take certain precautions before exercising.

Weight Loss In Children
Unexplained weight loss can occur in people who have type 2 diabetes, but its more common in people with type 1. Type 1 diabetes usually affects children and adolescents. Parents are often the first to notice an unusual weight loss in a child with type 1 diabetes.
Weight loss in kids with diabetes can occur even in those who have a normal or increased appetite for the same reasons it happens in adults with diabetes. Once kids are diagnosed and treated for diabetes, weight loss ceases and typically returns to normal.
How Does High Blood Sugar Cause Weight Gain
High blood sugar can cause an increase in weight in individuals primarily in two ways. The first way is by causing chronically high insulin amounts and the loss of insulin sensitivity.
The other way is when you eat food that rapidly heightens your blood sugar, there can be sudden blood sugar slumps in the following hours which lead to excessive hunger and overeating in an attempt to restore glucose levels back to normal.

Work Out The Details With Your Doctor
The best thing a patient can do is ask questions. Make sure you understand all the reasons you might be gaining weight, what medications youre taking that have that side effect and what alternatives are available. A screening test for low thyroid hormone is appropriate.
Youll also want to find out the out-of-pocket costs for each specific drug. Some are costly and youll need to consider whether you can easily afford these medications long-term.
Managing diabetes is a challenge, and your treatment plan has to work for you. Talk to your doctor and other healthcare providers and make adjustments until your plan is working well.
If you can effectively make the right lifestyle choices, you can minimize your need for medication. This means less cost, less side effects and an overall feeling of well-being.
Dr Kendrick And The Extreme Exceptions
There will always be exceptions to any hypothesis. Dr Malcom Kendrick notes that:
There is a general principle in science that if you have a proposed mechanism to explain the physiology of a disease, then that mechanism needs to remain true in all scenarios. Often its the case that mechanisms and theories unravel when you look at extreme scenarios. In this case, this would mean looking at people that have absolutely no fat cells, and the most obese population on the planet.
What are these exceptions to the mainstream notion of more body fat means a higher risk of diabetes?
- Sumo wrestlers
- Berardinelli-Seip lipodystrophy
You might expect that sumo wrestlers would have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes, and people with Berardinelli-Seip lipodystrophy would have a low prevalence. However, in reality, the opposite is true.
Its extremely uncommon for sumo wrestlers to develop type 2 diabetes when training Conversely, 100% of people with Berardinelli-Seip lipodystrophy have type 2 diabetes.
How is this possible? The hypothesis is that its all down to energy storage, i.e. when you eat carbohydrate-containing foods and your blood sugar levels rise, where in your body does that sugar go.
Contrastingly, individuals with Berardinelli-Seip lipodystrophy have no fat cells. So even if insulin levels dramatically increase, excess energy has nowhere to go after a high carb meal. This is why insulin resistance develops in this demographic.
Dr Kendrick concludes:

Weight And Type 2 Diabetes
Also, people with type 2 diabetes have a condition called insulin resistance . They are capable of producing insulin, but their bodies cannot use it properly.
Insulin resistance improves with weight loss and exercise. That is why most people with type 2 diabetes are advised to control their body weight with healthy habits.
When people with type 2 diabetes reach a healthy weight, they feel better and their diabetes symptoms lessen. They may also be less likely to develop complications, such as heart disease.
To determine if a persons weight is healthy, nutritionists use the body mass index or BMI . If the values escape from the healthy ones, it is necessary to follow an adequate diet plan and complement it with exercises.

Get More Healthful Carbs Throughout The Day
Eating carbohydrates low on the glycemic index is important for maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Folding healthy carbs into your six meals per day plan may help you gain weight, but its important to keep an eye on your glucose levels.
Adding a protein or fat each time you eat a carb may help increase caloric consumption, without causing your sugar levels to spike.
Examples of healthy carbs include:
- whole grains
Talk to your doctor about the appropriate serving size of protein for you, based on your kidney function and weight gain goal. For example, if you currently eat three to four ounces of protein per day, you may need to kick it up to seven ounces.
Symptoms Of Type 2 Diabetes
The symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, passing more urine than usual, and feeling tired all the time.
The symptoms occur because some or all of the glucose stays in your blood and isn’t used as fuel for energy. Your body tries to get rid of the excess glucose in your urine.
The main symptoms of type 2 diabetes are:
- urinating more often than usual, particularly at night
- itchiness around the genital area, or regular bouts of thrush
- cuts or wounds that heal slowly
- blurred vision caused by the lens of the eye becoming dry
The signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes are usually obvious and develop very quickly, often over a few weeks.
These signs and symptoms aren’t always as obvious, however, and it’s often diagnosed during a routine check-up.
This is because they are often mild and develop gradually over a number of years. This means you may have type 2 diabetes for many years without realising it.
Early diagnosis and treatment for type 2 diabetes is very important as it may reduce your risk of developing complications later on.
