Is Type 1 Or Type 2 Diabetes More Common

What To Know About Type 2 Diabetes

Recognizing Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes

The most common type of diabetes, type 2, isnt an autoimmune disorder. People with type 2 diabetesalso called adult-onsetdo produce their own insulin, but their bodies dont use very well. Between 90% to 95% of all people with diabetes have type 2. It usually develops in middle age but is sometimes seen in older kids or teens.

Most people with type 2 dont need to take insulin, but they may need other medications to help bring down blood sugar levels.

Results In Relation To Other Studies

Continued monitoring of the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among adults is particularly important because both have increased substantially over time among children and adolescents.2229 In the United States, the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study reported that between 2001 and 2009 the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents increased from 1.48 to 1.93 per 1000 and from 0.34 to 0.46 per 1000, respectively.30 Moreover, among US children and adolescents during 2002-12 the annual incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes increased by 1.4% and 7.1%, respectively.31 It was projected that among US children and adolescents, the number of cases of type 1 diabetes would nearly triple, from 179388 in 2010 to 587488 in 2050 and the number of cases of type 2 diabetes would almost quadruple, from 22820 in 2010 to 84131 in 2050.32 As a result, cases of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults will substantially increase as the children and adolescents reach adulthood. Major risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including obesity, physical inactivity, and unhealthy diets are still problematic and without a notable declining trend.12 Although genetic disposition plays a critical part in type 1 diabetes, the potential role of environmental risk factors are increasingly recognized.1333

When To See A Doctor

Visit your GP as soon as possible if you experience the main symptoms of diabetes, which include:

  • weight loss and loss of muscle bulk
  • itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush
  • cuts or wounds that heal slowly
  • blurred vision

Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly over weeks or even days.

Many people have type 2 diabetes for years without realising because the early symptoms tend to be general.

Symptoms Of Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes

  • Let us analyze the symptoms of these conditions in a detailed manner. In both these cases, the symptoms are usually the same as both of them lead to high blood sugar levels in the body. In this way, the lack of insulin in the body makes it difficult for the body to use excess sugar, and this leads to various health complications in the long run.
  • Some of the general symptoms that can be seen in diabetes patients are frequent urination, and they will face this problem regularly without any seasonal changes.
  • Apart from that, the thirst levels increase without any reason, and this can also become a problem as the body is dehydrated frequently, which can cause several health problems.
  • Due to the excess load on the body with regards to handling additional blood sugar, the patients feel tired often, and this can hamper their overall productivity in every area. When the symptoms continue for many years, the body becomes entirely dependent on insulin from external sources, and the pancreas produces less insulin even in Type 2 diabetes. In this manner, it can lead to a host of other health problems that include blurry vision and organ failure.
  • It is often noticed that people who have diabetes will not get quick relief from wounds, and this can also lead to infections in many cases when timely medication is not provided to the patients.

Type 1 Vs Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

Key Difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes ...

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have overlapping symptoms, but there are some differences. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases , symptoms of type 1 diabetes can onset quickly, while symptoms of type 2 diabetes often develop slowly.

Type 1 diabetes symptoms

The ADA says the following symptoms are quite common in those with type 1 diabetes:

  • Frequent urination
  • Tingling, pain, or numbing of the hands or feet

Type 1 And Type 2 Differences

Below is a guide to some of the main differences between type 1 and type 2.

Your body attacks the cells in your pancreas which means it cannot make any insulin.

Your body is unable to make enough insulin or the insulin you do make doesnt work properly.

We dont currently know what causes type 1 diabetes.

We know some things can put you at risk of having type 2 like weight and ethnicity.

The symptoms for type 1 appear more quickly.

Type 2 symptoms can be easier to miss because they appear more slowly.

Type 1 is managed by taking insulin to control your blood sugar.

You can manage type 2 diabetes in more ways than type 1. These include through medication, exercise and diet. People with type 2 can also be prescribed insulin.

Currently there is no cure for type 1 but research continues.

Type 2 cannot be cured but there is evidence to say in many cases it can be prevented and put into remission.

Differences Between Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes

Despite sharing a name, type 1 and type 2 diabetes are quite different. Understanding the key differences in type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes is critical for research into finding a way to cure, treat and prevent diabetes, but also for caring for someone with diabetes and managing your own diabetes. How these diseases begin, how they affect the body and how they are treated are all quite different.

Type 2 Diabetes Statistics

According to the International Diabetes Federation , more than 371 million people across the globe have diabetes and this figure is predicted to rise to over 550 million by 2030

Of the total global diabetes rate, 90% are living with type 2 diabetes but it is estimated that up to half of these people are unaware of their condition .

In the UK, more than 2.7 million people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes whilst a further 750,000 people are believed to have the symptoms but are yet to be diagnosed with the disease.

Lada Latent Autoimmune Diabetes Of Adults

What Is Type 2 Diabetes? | 2 Minute Guide | Diabetes UK

Up to a third of people who were initially diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes actually have latent autoimmune diabetes of adults , sometimes refer to as type 1.5. People with LADA have features of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes their immune system attacks the cells of the pancreas that produce insulin, but they may also develop insulin resistance.

The destruction of the insulin producing cells is much slower in LADA than in type 1 diabetes. A blood test is needed to tell the difference between type 2 diabetes and LADA.

Some people can manage LADA on diet, exercise and tablets in the initial months or years following diagnosis. However, most with move onto insulin therapy at some point.

Type 1 Vs Type 2 Diabetes Causes

Type 1 diabetes Type 2 diabetes An autoimmune disease where the body attacks the beta cells in the pancreas, stopping or reducing insulin production. Cells dont respond correctly to insulin as a result of insulin resistance. The pancreas will keep producing more insulin, but it will not effectively regulate blood sugar.

Type 1 Diabetes Complications

Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes: What Do They Have In Common

Abstract Type 1 and type 2 diabetes frequently co-occur in the same families, suggesting common genetic susceptibility. Such mixed family history is associated with an intermediate phenotype of diabetes: insulin resistance and cardiovascular complications in type 1 diabetic patients and lower BMI and less cardiovascular complications as well as lower C-peptide concentrations in type 2 diabetic patients. GAD antibody positivity is more common in type 2 diabetic patients from mixed families than from common type 2 diabetes families. The mixed family history is associated with more type 1-like genetic and phenotypic characteristics in type 2 diabetic patients, especially in the GAD antibody-positive subgroup. Leaving out the extreme ends of diabetes phenotypes, young children progressing rapidly to total insulin deficiency and strongly insulin-resistant subjects mostly with non-Europid ethnic origin, a large proportion of diabetic patients may have both type 1 and type 2 processes contributing to their diabetic phenotype.Continue reading > >

Overview Of Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes

What Are The Differences Between The Three Types Of ...

Type 1An autoimmune disease occurs when there is an abnormal immune response to a normal part of the body. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder caused by destruction of the cells that secrete insulin from the pancreas. This results in too little insulin being produced to support the bodys needs. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes.

Without insulin, glucose from the carbohydrate foods you eat cannot enter cells. This causes glucose to build up in the blood, leaving your bodys cells and tissues starved for energy. While a variety of tissue transplantation and genetically-based treatments are being studied, at this point the only widely-available treatments for type 1 diabetes are the injection of insulin and inhaled insulin.

  • Stomach converts food to glucose
  • Glucose enters the bloodstream
  • Pancreas produces little or no insulin
  • Glucose unable to enter body effectively
  • Glucose increases
  • Type 2Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes and can be caused by a combination of factors. One factor is that your body begins to make less insulin. A second is that your body becomes resistant to insulin. This means there is insulin in your body, but your body cannot use it effectively. Insulin resistance is often related to excess body fat. Medication, lifestyle changes, and monitoring can help control blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

Mody Maturity Onset Diabetes Of The Young

MODY is a rare form of diabetes that is caused by a change in a single gene. This makes MODY a type of monogenic diabetes.

Because half of our genes come from each parent, there is a 1 in 2 chance of inheriting MODY from an affected parent, and it runs strongly in families. However, sometimes the genetic change can develop on its own, without being inherited from a parent.

The most common genes that cause MODY are HNF1A, HNF4A, HNF1B and glucokinase, and the condition behaves differently depending on which gene is affected.

A genetic test can be used to confirm MODY and work out which gene is affected. It is important to know which gene is causing MODY, as treatment varies accordingly. Some forms of MODY may require insulin injections, while others are treated using drugs to boost insulin production in the pancreas. One form of MODY requires no treatment at all.

MODY is typically diagnosed under the age of 25, often with a family history of diabetes.

How Does Diabetes Affect The Body

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

Both types of diabetes are chronic diseases that affect the way your body regulates blood sugar, or glucose. Glucose is the fuel that feeds your bodys cells, but to enter your cells it needs a key. Insulin is that key.

People with type 1 diabetes dont produce insulin. You can think of it as not having a key.

People with type 2 diabetes dont respond to insulin as well as they should and later in the disease often dont make enough insulin. You can think of it as having a broken key.

People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes may also experience irritability, mood changes, and unintentional weight loss.

People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes may also have numbness and tingling in their hands or feet. Good glucose management significantly reduces the risk of developing numbness and tingling in someone with type 1 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association .

Although many of the symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are similar, they present in very different ways.

Many people with type 2 diabetes wont have symptoms for many years, and their symptoms often develop slowly over the course of time. Some people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all and dont discover they have the condition until complications arise.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes may have similar names, but theyre different diseases with unique causes.

    • There are approximately 64,000 new cases of Type 1 diabetes per year.
    • 90%-95% of the 34 million adults with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes.
    • Half of the women with gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes later in life.

The Difference Between Type 1 And Type 2

What Is Diabetes? | 2 Minute Guide | Diabetes UK

30.3 million people have diabetes , in one type or another. 84.1 million adults aged 18 years or older have prediabetes (33.9% of the adult US population. But what exactly is Diabetes? There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings surrounding the disease, particularly when it comes to type 1 versus type 2.

So lets start with the basics.

The two main types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2. In type 1 diabetes , the body completely stops making insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections to survive. This form of diabetes usually develops in children or young adults, but can occur at any age.In type 2 diabetes the body produces insulin, but the cells dont respond to insulin the way they should. This is called insulin resistance. In response to this insulin resistance, the pancreas should make more insulin, but in the case of type 2 diabetes, this does not happen. Because of these two problems, insulin resistance and trouble making extra insulin, there is not enough of an insulin effect to move the glucose from the blood into the cells. Type 2 diabetes is more likely to occur in people who are over the age of 40, overweight, and have a family history of diabetes, although more and more younger people, including adolescents, are developing type 2 diabetes.

Its important to know a few things about how your body works before you can take the best care of your diabetes.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , approximately 90-95% of all people who were tested for blood sugar were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.Usually, Type 2 is prominent in adults aged 45 or above. Yet, today, children and young adults are also diagnosed with the condition. The question now is: Why do so many people have Type 2 diabetes? And why is it more common than Type 1?There are different causes behind low insulin sensitivity and production.

How Dangerous Is Type 2 Diabetes

This type of diabetes is a result of insulin resistance in the body, and external insulin supply is needed regularly in most cases. However, this condition can be reversed or at least managed to a large extent by making suitable lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can improve the production of insulin in the body to some extent.

This condition worsens over a period of time, and it usually gets complicated when the patient is suffering from other health conditions like obesity. Otherwise, this condition is easily treatable, and most people get along with this condition without any issues.

When you analyze the nature of these two varieties of diabetes, it can be easily concluded that Type 1 diabetes is more dangerous than Type 2 diabetes as there is no treatment for Type 1 variety and lifelong dependency on insulin is the only solution. On the other hand, Type 2 diabetes can be managed with suitable modifications to eating habits and overall lifestyle.
