Fanta is known for their fun fruit flavors. From Pina Colada to Strawberry and from Fruit Punch to Grape, Fanta has many tasty flavors to pick from. Each one of them is entertainingly joyous in its own right. Unfortunately, the same cant be said for Fantas diet options.

These drinks are a mainstay for many of us PWDs thanks to their zero affect on our blood sugars. But there may still be cause for concern over some other important health issues.
Right off the bat we should note that research into diet soda consumption and the stuff in them is still in its infancy. Some studies say its bad and other studies say that its well, not exactly good, but not as bad as some think. Heres what we found and well leave the final judgment up to you:

Now, this doesnt necessarily show causality, as Dr. Hannah Gardener, one of the researchers at the University of Miami, explained. Further studies, she says, are needed to show what exactly about diet soda is causing cardiovascular disease in these patients. As a person with diabetes or prediabetes, counting carbohydrates should be a top priority when it comes to nutrition.
Getting the proper vitamins and minerals from whole foods is also important, but limiting the number of carbs you consume will directly affect your blood sugar more than any other dietary habit.
Drinking plain water day after day can get boring and you may be tempted to reach for a soda, a Gatorade, or an energy drink.

Diet Soda Is Associated With Weight Gain
Some research suggests that the brain reacts to artificial sweeteners much like it does to sugary sweets. Ingesting them frequently may result in an increased desire for high-calorie foods such as sugary treats, putting you at a greater risk of weight gain and binge eating all the cookies in the break room.
Another study found that overweight individuals who switched to diet soda were more likely to consume more calories in food than overweight individuals who drank regular soda. Those who drank diet soda even had a higher BMI than their counterparts.
What Are The Risks
While diet soft drinks are safe, they provide no nutrients. In addition to diet soda, the ADA recommends drinking water, unsweetened iced, or hot tea, and sparkling or infused water, which similarly have no calories and few nutrients.
Although they contain carbohydrates, milk and 100 percent fruit juices can be wise choices when you consider the nutrients they provide. Be sure to limit fruit juices due to their high natural sugar content.
A 2000 study published in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine investigated the risks of drinking colas in youth.
The study found that drinking carbonated beverages was associated with bone fractures in teenage girls. Most of the girls drank regular sugar sweetened soda, while only 20 percent drank the diet version.
Although the same wasnt shown for boys, the study did raise concerns about replacing milk with soda during a critical time for bone development.
Diet soda consumption for adults only becomes problematic when the quantity consumed is very excessive. This can lead to higher intakes of caffeine if the beverages are caffeinated.
Replacing all water and dairy or 100 percent juice with diet soda in the diet can lead to missing essential nutrients.
The acceptable daily intake is the level of intake considered safe. For an adult weighing 150 pounds, the ADI is 20 twelve ounce soft drinks or 97 packets of no-calorie sweetener such as aspartame.
The negative press around aspartame is mostly based upon animal studies.
Diet Soda And Diabetes
Drinking a can of diet soda per day can increase up to 36% of risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, according to a study done by the University of Minnesota. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of medical conditions, such as increased glucose levels, high blood pressure, large belly fat, raised cholesterol. It imposes high risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes etc.
Though diet soda doesnt contain sugar, it can still be risky for diabetics. It may be the sugar-free alternative to sugary soda. But it doesnt mean it can be a healthier choice. It is true that diet sodas have little or no calories and they are considered to be the better options for people with diabetes, it may not be healthy in some cases.
In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a recent study was conducted on 66,118 women for up to 14 years to keep an eye on beverages they drink. At the end, both artificially sweetened drinks and sugar-sweetened drinks found linked with Type 2 Diabetes.
Recent studies have also put emphasis on the strong connections of diet soda with factors relating to diabetes, such as metabolic syndrome and weight gain.
