Diabetics Can Have Cake And Eat It Too

A Dessert a Diabetic can Love! – Chocolate Cake for diabetics

Guidelines recently released by the American Diabetes Association lift restrictions on products made from sucrose, or table sugar, and allow a diet high in monounsaturated fats like olive, canola, and peanut oils. The guidelines give diabetics more dietary options, but patients still must be vigilant about how they eat, experts say.

“We often say that a good diabetic diet is really just a good diet,” ADA spokesman Nathaniel Clark, MD, tells WebMD. “We have tried to get away from the concept that there is a special diet that people must follow when they have diabetes. Somebody with diabetes can eat anything that anyone else can eat. They just need to be far more careful about how they eat.”

The key to keeping diabetes under control is not avoiding particular foods, but keeping blood sugar at acceptable levels. The guidelines stress that regular exercise is key to achieving this goal for most diabetics. Moderate exercise not only lowers blood sugar levels, it is an important part of permanent weight control.

High blood sugar levels increase the chance of problems from diabetes such as heart attack, stroke, leg amputations, and blindness. Fifteen million Americans have type 2 diabetes. Being overweight or obese is the most significant risk factor for the disease, which is reaching epidemic numbers among adults and being seen for the first time in large numbers of children.

Angel Food Cake Recipe For People With Diabetes

Diabetes is hard enough to live with when you get hit with all the holidays with all the food. We have to remember what diabetes is, the accumulation of sugar in the blood due to starches and sugars that are ingested. Not only do we have to watch desserts suitable for individuals with diabetes but it makes a big difference also when we decrease the bread, corn peas potatoes, gravies, dressings also for these dinners. Usually by the time you get to dessert you have already over loaded on starches, then we pile sugars on top. So, one of the first things to do is be aware of all the starches you serve. Lets take a look at some of the things diabetics can have, angel food cake, graham crackers, fruit, and anything that is actually sugar free. You have all kinds of choices here in the pudding and jellos and cool whips because they all come sugar free. Below is one of my favorite desserts, and its is very festive when made in a large glass bowl. This is my version, you can substitute any fruit or flavor you want.

You need two sugar free angel food cakes, and one quart of strawberries, one large container of cool whip, and 2 packets of strawberry sugar free jello.

Clean and cut up strawberries, make jello according to directions and put in pitcher.

ENJOY

Do I Need To Count My Sugar Intake On A Daily Basis

Yes, you need to! Your intake needs to be consistent throughout the day. For example, dont eat all of your daily allotted amount of carbohydrates for breakfast and expect to go the rest of the day without any carbs or sugars.

That is especially important if you are on medications for diabetes or use insulin. They can drop your blood sugar during the day and without any carbohydrate intake, you could be at a risk of having very low blood sugar levels.

Counting your carbohydrate and sugar intake daily and making sure that they are consistent for each meal helps ensure that your body has enough energy throughout the day.

To find out what your total daily allotted amount should be, consult with your doctor or your dietician. Talk to them about the best ways to count your intake and about how your medications will affect your blood sugar.

What Sweet Things Can A Diabetic Eat

What Desserts Can Diabetics Eat / What To Eat When You ...

If you are anything like me, you probably like most of your desserts to be sweet. Savory desserts can be awesome as well, but its hard to beat a sweet dessert to end a great meal.

I have written a very detailed guide to the best sweeteners for people with diabetes that covers most of the natural and artificial sweeteners on the market. I highly recommend reading it, but if you only want the cliff notes, my favorite sweetener that doesnt impact blood sugar is Stevia.

Sugar and sugar substitutes will obviously affect your blood sugar and artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols can have unwanted side effects .

The recipes in this roundup use either Stevia or get their sweetness from other ingredients like fruit and berries.

What Are The Different Types Of Chocolate

What exactly is chocolate? Chocolate comes from the seed of the cocoa tree. Cocoa liquor includes cocoa solids and cocoa butter, and it is the percent cacao that you may see on a food label. Cocoa powder includes cocoa liquor minus some of cocoa butter, leaving solids.

Chocolate has cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, and often sugar:

  • Dark or semisweet chocolate has at least 35% cocoa liquor
  • Milk chocolate has condensed or powdered milk in the chocolate mixture has usually contains 10%12% cocoa liquor
  • White chocolate has cocoa butter, milk, and sugar

Then, of course, there are chocolate-flavored products or products made with a little bit of chocolate and a lot of other ingredients. Brownies and chocolate cake and cookies have flour, sugar, and eggs. Chocolate ice cream has sugar and cream. Chocolate syrup has water and sugar.

The Proof Of The Pudding

I have to admit, the mixture didnt look promising. To quote my daughter Kipper, That looks HORRIBLE, Mummy! But once it was baked it was actually pretty good! We put a dollop of batter into a cupcake case and baked it separately as a tester I didnt want to serve my FIL a horrible cake on his birthday, after all and having had a cautious nibble, Kipper then scoffed almost the whole thing. .

Rather than icing, we covered the top of the cake in whipped cream and raspberries. With a few birthday candles this diabetic chocolate cake looked very festive! DHs Dad was suitably chuffed, and we all tucked in to slices of delicious low-carb birthday cake and cups of tea. Hip hip! HOORAY!

What Causes People With Diabetes To Get Diarrhea

The cause for the connection between diabetes and diarrhea isnt clear, but research suggests that neuropathy may be a factor. Neuropathy refers to numbness or pain resulting from nerve damage. If you have diabetes, high blood sugar levels can damage your nerve fibers. This generally occurs in the hands or feet. Issues with neuropathy are common causes for many of the complications that accompany diabetes.

Another possible cause is sorbitol. People often use this sweetener in diabetic foods. Sorbitol has proven to be a potent laxative in amounts as small as 10 grams.

An imbalance in your enteric nervous system can also cause diarrhea. Your ENS regulates the functions of your gastrointestinal system.

Researchers have also looked at the following possibilities:

Diabetic Dining: Can Diabetics Eat Cream Of Wheat

Type 2 diabetes: Follow these tips on how to enjoy ...

As you may have already heard, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is nothing like a good bowl of cereal wheat you are in a morning rush. However, most cereal brands contain fast-digesting carbohydrates. They usually have high glycemic index scores.

The glycemic index is a measure of how foods affect ones blood sugar. Cereals usually have a high glycemic index score which means that the body breaks them down fast which causes blood sugar spikes. If you have diabetes, you should steer clear of such foods.

Not all cereal brans are loaded with fats digesting carbs however, therefore back to our question, can diabetics eat cream of wheat?

Cream and wheat is a popular breakfast that is loaded with many nutrients. heres is a complete guide on how to include cream of wheat in your diabetic diet.

Diabetes And Added Sugars: Other Types To Watch For

One particular type of sugar that has attracted a lot of negative attention is high-fructose corn syrup and for good reason, as multiple studies suggest HFCS can influence diabetes risk. Some research in people who are overweight and obese, for example, suggests regularly consuming drinks sweetened with either fructose, a byproduct of HFCS, or glucose can lead to weight gain, and drinks with fructose in particular may reduce insulin sensitivity and spike blood sugar levels.

An article published in November 2012 in the journal Global Public Health found that countries with more access to HFCS tended to have higher rates of the disease. Though its likely that these countries overall eating habits play a role in their populations diabetes risk, a study published in February 2013 in the journal PLoS One found limiting access to HFCS in particular may help reduce rates of the diagnosis.

Because its a relatively cheap ingredient, HFCS has become the most commonly used sweetener in processed foods, from granola bars to fruit drinks, and more. To help reduce your own consumption, pay attention to the details on your foods nutrition label.
