Sugar Free Angel Food Cake with Xylitol

One bite of this Healthy Angel Food Cake and youll be convinced youre eating a light, fluffy, and sweet, dessert-like cloud. ;Its perfectly sweet, perfectly moist, and perfectly flavored with vanilla beans. ;Youd never ever guess that this recipe is totally guilt free, sugar free, fat free, low carb, gluten free, and dairy free too!

Angel Food Cake has been on my Recipe Wishlist; since I started blogging. ;And that was in 2011

*makes shocked face*

Why did I wait so long to make this cake? ;Because Angel Food Cake;is kind of like a crazy bakers science experiment. ;It doesnt contain the typical ingredients of typical cakes ;no baking powder, no baking soda, no eggs

The only leavening agents in Angel Food Cake consist of egg whites and cream of tartar. ;You need to whip the crap out of the two to make a super voluminous, egg white cloud. ;The structure of this cake is so delicate that you need to cool the cake upside down, otherwise it will sink in on itself and you will not be a very;happy baker.

What? ;How do I know that? ;Oh, I dont know ;-_-

ANYWAYS.

Angel Food Cake is often seen as a guilt-free treat because its naturally fat free ;thats right. ;This cake contains no egg yolks, no butter, and no oil. ;But fat free does not necessarily mean;healthy. ;Especially when the cake is filled with bleached all purpose flour and a ton of high-calorie, high-glycemic white sugar.

Enjoy!

With love and good eats,

Indulge no strings attached!

Why Angel Food Cake Is Good For Diabetics

The main reason that angel food cake is acceptable as a dessert for diabetics is not so much the low sugar count, although that in and of itself is important as it is the low amount of carbohydrates that are present in the cake. This means that for diabetics angel food cake when consumed in low to moderate amounts on an occasional basis will not upset their blood sugar levels, at least not to any great degree.

However, another danger is not the cake, but what it is eaten with that can cause issues as well. This means that the rich icing that usually accompanies angel food cake must be left off and served plain. However there are some additions that can be made with the cake so that diabetics can consume it without worry, yet get all the sweet taste that they desire.

Fat Free Topping: A fat free cream topping can be used on the cake to provide the rich, sweet flavor without adding much in the way of calories or sugars to the system.

Fruits: Serving angel food cake with strawberries is a nice touch as well. You can also use blueberries or raspberries to help flavor the cake. For many, this is the perfect side item to help you enjoy this type of cake.

Non-Sugar Sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners can be used in the baking of the cake to help make it more flavorful without loading it up with sugars, carbohydrates or fats that can pack on the pounds.

Diabetics Can Have Cake And Eat It Too

Guidelines recently released by the American Diabetes Association lift restrictions on products made from sucrose, or table sugar, and allow a diet high in monounsaturated fats like olive, canola, and peanut oils. The guidelines give diabetics more dietary options, but patients still must be vigilant about how they eat, experts say.

“We often say that a good diabetic diet is really just a good diet,” ADA spokesman Nathaniel Clark, MD, tells WebMD. “We have tried to get away from the concept that there is a special diet that people must follow when they have diabetes. Somebody with diabetes can eat anything that anyone else can eat. They just need to be far more careful about how they eat.”

The key to keeping diabetes under control is not avoiding particular foods, but keeping blood sugar at acceptable levels. The guidelines stress that regular exercise is key to achieving this goal for most diabetics. Moderate exercise not only lowers blood sugar levels, it is an important part of permanent weight control.

High blood sugar levels increase the chance of problems from diabetes such as heart attack, stroke, leg amputations, and blindness. Fifteen million Americans have type 2 diabetes. Being overweight or obese is the most significant risk factor for the disease, which is reaching epidemic numbers among adults and being seen for the first time in large numbers of children.

History Of Artificial Sweeteners

Its a funny story how low-calorie sweeteners were discovered. Did you know that it was all an accident that took place in 1878 by the German chemist Dr. Christian Fahlberg?

He unintentionally discovered saccharin, thus marking the start of low-calorie sweeteners that shaped the food industry today as we know it.

The artificial sweeteners industry became even more popular with the outbreak of World War One. Sugar supply in Europe reached critically low levels and people were looking for alternative ways to sweeten their food.

Hence, after World War One, sugar-free sweeteners became a regular product found in many kitchens!
