What Yogurt Is Good For Diabetics

Bring On The Cinnamon Buns

Yogurt and Diabetes

No lie, I am telling you right now mix the Dannon Fit and Light Diabetic Friendly vanilla yogurt with granola or oats and you will have a meal that smells and tastes just like a cinnamon bun.

That is right a cinnamon bun! It smells so good and tastes even better. I have tired this yogurt with two different kinds of mixtures.

Both of the mixtures were done in mason jars as make-ahead meals.

The first mixture used the KIND Peanut Butter Granola clusters mixed with a container of the Dannon Light and Fit Diabetic Friendly vanilla yogurt. I mixed these two ingredients about two hours before I planned to eat and when I took the lid of the jar, I just about fell over with this wonderful smell of cinnamon bun. This was my first experience with mixing this yogurt with anything and I was not disappointed.

The second mixture was when I was making overnight oats. I mixed 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats with 1/2 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk and one container of the Dannon Light and Fit Diabetic Friendly vanilla yogurt. I mixed everything together about 4 hours before I planned to eat and much like the granola experience, it was amazing how sweet and aromatic this meal tastes and smells. I was completely beside myself.

Well, the answer is yes, but under the condition that frozen yogurts have low-fat and are sugar-free. Hence, before adding yogurt in the shopping cart, read the nutrition label. Finalize the one that contains negligible fats and sugar. Speaking about incorporating frozen yogurt for gestational diabetes patients or those with other types of diabetes, one can enjoy it in a specific serving size for snacking in between meals. The ideal serving amount of fat-free, sugar-free frozen yogurt for diabetics is strictly half cup and not more than that.

Also, improve flavor by topping it with small amounts of chopped nuts and fresh berries. Likewise, one can surely create variety to the taste and flavor of plain frozen yogurt, and enjoy tasty snacks. For diabetics, eating this frozen yogurt is a simple way to satisfy cravings for sweet goodies and desserts. Other options of good snacks for diabetics, especially for patients who have a sweet tooth are fat-free ice cream , crackers, fig bars, popsicles and diet soda.

How To Find The Right Greek Yogurt

Of course, not all Greek yogurts are created equal. With many brands and flavors on the market, it’s important to read nutrition labels carefully to find one that will work with a diabetes-friendly diet. Carbohydrate content is the most important item to look for on the nutrition label of Greek yogurt, since it accounts for the sugar content that people with diabetes must watch. “The best choice is always a nonfat version,” Ross says.

In terms of flavor, plain varieties also work best over the fruit-filled choices. “If there’s fruit on the bottom, it means there’s going to be more sugar and carbs in it,” Ross warns. “If you really want a flavored yogurt, you can flavor it yourself with fruit at home.”

Another alternative is to select vanilla Greek yogurt varieties, which are usually lower in carbohydrates than those with fruit. “My patients feel like they are getting a decadent treat,” Ross says. “It’s almost too good to be true.” To avoid accidentally exceeding your carbohydrate limit, you should also check the label to find out how many servings are in a single package “In some products, one container may be two servings, so you have to be careful,” Ross says.

Get Cultured

Yogurt’s trademark tang is due to live cultures that boost immunity. Look for labels with the National Yogurt Association Live & Active Cultures seal, which means at least 100 million active starter cultures per gram.

Pack in protein

Brands with at least 7 grams of protein per 4-6 ounce serving keep hunger at bay. Rule of thumb: Seek options with more protein than sugar.

Go for Greek!

Thick, creamy Greek yogurt gets our vote. Most brands contain 10 grams of protein per 4-6 ounce serving and are lower in lactose.

Don’t fear fat.

Whole-milk yogurts are a great source of hugnger-satisfying fat-a formerly feared nutrient that slows digestion. But fat adds flavor naturally, so brands don’t have to resort to added sugars. Stick to yogurts with less than 8 grams total to keep saturated fat in check.

Spare the sugar.

Mind your mix-ins.

Know your numbers.

Types Of Yogurt In Canada

There are many styles and preparations of yogurt available in Canada to choose from:

Stirred yogurt is the traditional type of yogurt made by fermenting milk in a large tank, then cooling and stirring it to achieve a creamy texture.

Balkan-style yogurt is fermented inside individual containers rather than in a large tank. A warm cultured milk mixture is poured into containers and incubated without any further stirring, which gives it a thicker texture. This type of yogurt is frequently used for yogurt that is packaged with fruit on the bottom.

Greek yogurt is strained to remove most of its whey, resulting in a thicker consistency than regular unstrained yogurt, while still preserving the distinctive sour taste of yogurt.

Skyr, or Icelandic yogurt, has a consistency similar to Greek yogurt, but a milder taste. It is made the same way as Greek yogurt but is strained further to make it even thicker.

Probiotic yogurt contains additional strains of good bacteria called probiotics, in addition to regular yogurts bacterial cultures, which contribute to healthy gut flora. It has the same creamy taste as regular yogurt.

What Kind Of Yogurt Is Good For Diabetics

So far, you might have found out that almost all yogurts contain a lot of sugar. This is not good for diabetes sufferers because it will cause their blood glucose levels to spike and can lead to more serious issues such as diabetes complications.

It’s important that the yogurt you choose should have less than 15g of sugars per serving, otherwise your body won’t be able to handle all those carbs in one go! It’s also important that yogurt is made with natural ingredients. This means that the yogurt should not contain artificial sweeteners or any other additives.

A lot of yogurts sold in shops these days fall into this category because they have been created specifically for people who are on a glucose-restricted diet. These types of yogurts are often called ‘low carb’ and you can find them at most supermarkets near the weight loss products, health foods, or dairy sections!

This is why I like Greek yogurt from small farms the most. It has no sugar added, just live cultures and milk protein: it’s healthy to eat plain or as an ingredient in your cooking too.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of some delicious yogurts with no added sugar that are perfect for diabetic patients.

  • Use of natural sweeteners: Although artificial sweeteners are readily available in most stores and in many light and no-added-sugar ice cream options, the medical community do not recommend them.

Sugar Content In Frozen Yogurt

What Kind Of Yogurt Is Good For Diabetes

Before we have a discussion about frozen yogurt for diabetics, lets take a brief look at the importance of diabetic diet and sugar content in yogurt. According to the disease pathology, diabetes is further categorized into type 1 diabetes , type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes . But, a condition apparent to all diabetic patients is elevated glucose concentration in the blood. Adding more sugar and carbohydrate in the diet puts a risk for further increase in the blood sugar levels.

The correct diabetic diet is thus, planned in a way that food items required for the diabetic patient are included in sufficient amounts. Regarding sugar content in frozen yogurt, it is a main ingredient for majority of the product brands. In ½ cup serving size of low-fat, regular frozen yogurt, the quantity of sugar accounts to 19.6 g. For this dairy product based on curdled milk, sweetening agent is added to reduce tart and tangy taste. Fortunately, sugar-free frozen yogurt is also available in the market. Of course, it tastes tangy for many people. But, controlling blood sugar is a priority for diabetic patients, rather than having tasty foods.
