Drug Interactions Of Humalog Vs Novolog

Lispro, Aspart, NPH, and Glargine – Insulin Preparations (Rapid, Short, and Long Acting)

Humalog and Novolog insulin can interact with several different drugs. Antidiabetic agents, such as glipizide or glyburide, are sometimes used along with insulin to help control blood sugar levels. However, using these drugs with insulin can also increase the risk of dangerously low blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia.

Corticosteroids like prednisone or dexamethasone can increase glucose levels in the blood. Therefore, taking these drugs may decrease the effects of insulin. Taking drugs like antipsychotics or diuretics can also decrease the effects of insulin and increase insulin resistance. Insulin dosages may need to be adjusted when taking these other medications.

Beta-blockers can alter the effects of insulin. Additionally, beta-blockers can mask the signs of hypoglycemia that can occur after taking an incorrect insulin dose. This could create a dangerous situation that needs to be monitored.

Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking to prevent the possibility of a drug interaction.

Select Safety Information

Do not take Humalog, Insulin Lispro Injection, Humalog Mix50/50, Humalog Mix75/25, or Insulin Lispro Protamine and Insulin Lispro Injectable Suspension Mix75/25 if you have symptoms of low blood sugar or an allergy to insulin lispro products or any of their ingredients.

What Is Insulin Lispro

Insulin Lispro is a hormone that works by lowering levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin lispro is a fast-acting insulin that starts to work about 15 minutes after injection, peaks in about 1 hour, and keeps working for 2 to 4 hours.

Insulin lispro is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.

Admelog and HumaLOG are used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults, or type 1 diabetes in adults and children who are at least 3 years old.

Lyumjev is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How Do I Take It

Many people get insulin into their blood using a needle and syringe, a cartridge system, or pre-filled pen systems.

The place on the body where you give yourself the shot may matter. You’ll absorb insulin the most evenly when you inject it into your belly. The next best places to inject it are your arms, thighs, and buttocks. Make it a habit to inject insulin at the same general area of your body, but change up the exact injection spot. This helps lessen scarring under the skin.

Inhaled insulin, insulin pumps, and a quick-acting insulin device are also available.

Exceptions To Insulin Dosing And Timing

Image 1

Long-acting insulins arenât tied to mealtimes. Youâll take detemir once or twice a day no matter when you eat. And youâll take glargine once a day, always at the same time. Deglutec is taken once a day, and the time of day can be flexible. But some people do have to pair a long-acting insulin with a shorter-acting type or another medication that does have to be taken at meal time.

Rapid-acting products can also be taken right after you eat, rather than 15 minutes before mealtime. You can take some of them at bedtime.

For more information about when to take insulin, read the “dosing and administration” section of the insulin product package insert that came with your insulin product, or talk with your doctor.

What If I Miss A Dose

Youll typically take Humalog and Humalog Mix up to 15 minutes before you eat a meal. If you forget, you can take your dose right after you finish your meal. But if its been more than an hour since you ate, you should wait and take your next dose as planned. If you take Humalog or Humalog Mix too long after eating, you could develop hypoglycemia .

To help make sure that you dont miss a dose, try setting a reminder on your phone. A medication timer may be useful, too.

What Is Basal Insulin And What Is Bolus Insulin

Basal insulin is background insulin that covers your normal metabolism and insulin needs. Your pancreas normally makes set amounts of insulin around the clock, and basal insulin mimics this process, providing a background low level of insulin. Basal insulin is a slow and steady dose of insulin and can be given as an injection or through an insulin pump.

Bolus insulin is when insulin is given as a single, large dose to handle a rise in blood glucose, like the one that happens during eating. A bolus dose of insulin can be given as an injection or through an insulin pump. Bolus doses of insulin have a big effect in a short time.

What Else Is Important To Know About Lispro

To lower the risk of complications, you should:

  • Look at the injection pen to confirm it belongs to you and has the correct dose.
  • Make sure the insulin is clear, like water, before taking it.
  • Choose an injection site thats at least a half-inch away from your last injection.
  • Put used needles in a sharps container, not a trash can.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Lispro insulin is a short-acting insulin that you take before meals. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dose. Theyll also explain when and how to use it. Its important to take the correct dose at the appropriate time. Missing a dose or taking too much at once can cause complications. If you have questions about your prescription, call your healthcare provider.

Insulin Analogs Are Now Replacing Human Insulin In The Us

Insulins are categorized by differences in onset, peak, duration, concentration, and route of delivery.

Human Insulin and Insulin Analogs are available for insulin replacement therapy. Insulins also are classified by the timing of their action in your body specifically, how quickly they start to act, when they have a maximal effect and how long they act.Insulin analogs have been developed because human insulins have limitations when injected under the skin. In high concentrations, such as in a vial or cartridge, human clumps together. This clumping causes slow and unpredictable absorption from the subcutaneous tissue and a dose-dependent duration of action . In contrast, insulin analogs have a more predictable duration of action. The rapid acting insulin analogs work more quickly, and the long acting insulin analogs last longer and have a more even, peakless effect.

What Is The Role Of Short

Both Humalog and Novolog have been used in pregnancy and have been shown to be safe and effective. The largest randomized controlled trial of 322 women confirmed that Aspart reduces postprandial hyperglycemia and the risk of hypoglycemia compared with regular insulin in type 1 patients. It may be especially helpful in type 1 women with gastroparesis because it can be dosed 20 minutes after eating to ensure that food is not immediately vomited after a full bolus is given. Both short-acting insulins have been used in type 2 and GDM women and appear to be superior to regular insulin in reducing postprandial glucose excursions.

How Is Insulin Administered

Types of Insulin Medlibes: Online Medical Library

Insulin is most commonly administered subcutaneously and there are three main delivery methods:

  • Insulin Pens: these hold a replaceable cartridge of insulin and use a replaceable needle to puncture the skin and deliver the insulin subcutaneously
  • Insulin pumps: these are small computerized devices that deliver a continuous supply of insulin under the skin. They are also known as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion devices
  • Via a syringe and needle using a vial of insulin.

An inhaled insulin is available for adults with type 1 diabetes that can be administered at the start of each meal. It is used in combination with a long-acting insulin and is not recommended in people who smoke or who have recently quit smoking.

So far, nobody has successfully made an oral insulin tablet that delivers an effective dose of insulin. The problem is that insulin degrades in the stomach and intestine before it even has a chance to get absorbed into the bloodstream. In the hospital, insulin may be administered directly into a vein or into a muscle under certain circumstances.

How To Take Humalog

Always take Humalog according to your doctors or healthcare providers instructions.

There are two types of Humalog: Humalog and Humalog Mix. And theyre typically given as subcutaneous injections .

Humalog may also be used in an insulin pump, but Humalog Mix cant be used this way. When you first start treatment, your healthcare provider will explain how to take your medication.

Your healthcare provider may sometimes give Humalog by intravenous injection .

Step-by-step instructions on how to use Humalog and Humalog Mix KwikPen, vials, and cartridges will be provided in the pamphlet that comes with your medication. Instructions are also available on the manufacturers website.

The Need For Insulin Analogs

Insulin has been in use for nearly 90 years, mostly as a treatment to keep alive patients affected by the form we now call type 1 diabetes. Insulin is also increasingly used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes: about 28% of these patients are using insulin in the US and a similar percentage is reported in Italy . However, reluctance to taking insulin among patients and resistance to prescribing insulin among healthcare providers may help explain, in part, why insulin therapy is often postponed in patients who could benefit from it . Moreover, the risk of hypoglycemic episodes and weight gain, and the limiting pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic features of standard insulins , may have represented further concerns for delaying insulin therapy. It has been suggested that current uncertainty in medicine regarding diabetes and its treatment may be implicated in clinical inertia, currently defined as failure of health care providers to initiate or intensify therapy when indicated .

What Other Information Should I Know

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain lab tests to check your body’s response to insulin lispro injection products. Your doctor will also tell you how to check your response to insulin lispro injection products by measuring your blood sugar levels at home. Follow these instructions carefully.

You should always wear a diabetic identification bracelet to be sure you get proper treatment in an emergency.

Do not let anyone else use your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

Your doctor will work with you to prescribe the type of insulin that’s best for you and your diabetes. Making that choice will depend on many things, including:

  • How you respond to insulin.
  • Lifestyle choices. The type of food you eat, how much alcohol you drink, or how much exercise you get will all affect how your body uses insulin.
  • Your willingness to give yourself multiple injections per day
  • Your age
  • Your goals for managing your blood sugar

Your doctor may prescribe more than one type. You might need to take insulin more than once daily, to space your doses throughout the day, or to add other medicines.

Afrezza, a rapid-acting inhaled insulin, is FDA-approved for use before meals for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The drug peaks in your blood in about 15-20 minutes and it clears your body in 2-3 hours. It must be used along with long-acting insulin in people with type 1 diabetes.

The chart below lists the types of injectable insulin with details about onset , peak and duration . These three things may vary. The final column offers some insight into the “coverage” provided by the different insulin types in relation to mealtime.

How Long Does Humalog Last In Your Body

Humalog comes in two forms: Humalog and Humalog Mix. Each form can last a different amount of time in your body.

Humalog can last about 4 to 5 hours in your body, while Humalog Mix can last about 22 hours.

Humalogs half-life is 1 hour. This means that half of a dose of Humalog will be eliminated by your body after 1 hour. In general, after about four to five half-lives, a medication reaches very low levels and is eliminated from your body.

The half-life of Humalog Mix isnt known for sure.

How Strong Is Insulin

Most insulin in the U.S. is sold at a concentration of 100 units per ml . However, there are currently four concentrated products on the market:

  • Humulin R which has a 500 units per ml strength available
  • Humalog which has a 200 units per ml strength available
  • Toujeo Solostar which contains 300 units per ml of insulin glargine
  • Tresiba which has a 200 units per ml strength available.

Comparison Of Insulin Actions

To our knowledge, this is the first study comparing action of lispro and aspart on carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the same patients. We found no significant differences comparing the actions of both analogs on GRd , on EGP , on GIR , and on carbohydrate oxidation. All of these effects peaked at 23 h and had disappeared after 56 h. As shown in , the nonsignificant differences in GRd and EGP were in opposite directions . This supports the notion that the bioactivity profiles of the two insulins are interchangeable.

Similarly, there were no significant differences comparing actions of the two analogs on plasma FFA and ketone body levels nor on FFA oxidation. Insulin effects peaked at 2 h and had disappeared after 4 h. These results are in accord with previously published data on effects of insulin lispro and insulin aspart .

Thus, the actions of both insulin analogs on carbohydrate and on lipid metabolism appeared to be indistinguishable from each other. This was not surprising in view of the similarity of their blood levels. Because of the small number of patients studied, we cannot completely rule out the possibly of small differences in some of the action of these two insulin analogs. Nevertheless, our data suggested that these two rapidly acting insulin analogs should be equally effective in treating the metabolic abnormalities of patients with type 1 diabetes.

Figure 1

Plasma Ffa And Ketone Bodies

Humalog U

Basal plasma FFA levels decreased from 413 ± 65 to 130 ± 19 and from 620 ± 109 to 207 ± 40 mol/l, 180 and 120 min, respectively, after injection of insulin aspart and insulin lispro. After that, FFA levels rose in both groups reaching 1,071 ± 112 and 1,195 ± 185 mol/l after 480 min. The differences between the groups were not statistically significant . Ketone body concentrations changed in parallel with FFA concentrations. Again, there were no significant differences between the two groups at any time .

What Should I Know About Humalog Vs Novolog

Humalog and Novolog are both used to manage blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Novolog contains insulin aspart, while Humalog contains insulin lispro.

Both Humalog and Novolog are rapid-acting insulins, which means they work quickly after theyre injected. But these drugs cant be substituted for one another.

For a detailed comparison of these two drugs, see our Humalog vs. Novolog: Important Differences and More article. And talk with your doctor if you have more questions about these medications.

Humalog and Humulin arent the same drug. Humulin contains human insulin, while Humalog contains insulin lispro. And different Humulin products also contain different types of insulin.

For example:

  • Humulin-R contains rapid-acting human insulin thats injected 30 minutes before eating.
  • Humulin-N, on the other hand, contains a type of human insulin called isophane insulin. Its an intermediate-acting insulin that takes longer to start working and lasts longer in your body.

Humalog also comes as Humalog Mix, which contains a mixture of rapid-acting and intermediate-acting forms of insulin lispro. Similarly, another product called Humulin 70/30 contains a mixture of rapid and intermediate-acting human insulin.

If youd like to know more about the differences and similarities of Humalog and Humulin, see this drug article. And be sure to talk with your doctor about which drug is right for you.

The manufacturer of Humalog also makes a form of the drug called insulin lispro.
