White BreadRefined starches white bread, white rice, white pasta, and anything made with white flour act a lot like sugar once the body starts to digest them. Therefore, just like sugar, refined starches interfere with glucose control and should be avoided by those with diabetes. Whole grains are a better choice because theyre richer in fiber and generally cause a slower, steadier rise in blood sugar. Instead of white bread or a bagel for breakfast, opt for a toasted whole grain English Muffin . At lunch and dinner, replace white carbs with healthier whole grain options such as brown or wild rice, barley, quinoa, and whole-wheat bread to minimize the impact on your blood sugar. Enriched bread is also one to look out for. Enriched bread is refined bread in which the outer coating, bran and the germ of the kernel are removed.

During this process, most of the natural vitamins and minerals are removed about twenty, Watkins says. Enriched means 4 are added back. So this would not be any better on blood sugar than typical white bread.

Also, the diabetes educator says some types of bread that look brown actually contain coloring and it does not mean it is better for you than white bread, thats why its always important to read the ingredients.

This is, in my opinion, one of the best low carb breads available. Each bun is the size of a regular hamburger bun and they have a light and fluffy texture. And most importantly, they taste like a wheat bun.

I like to toast my bread and this bread toast beautifully without melting or turning to cardboard.

Daves Killer Bread Good Seed Thin

Daves Killer Bread is another brand youll see on most supermarket shelves, at least if youre in California. Its supposedly the most sold organic bread in the US.

I choose the Good Seed Thin-sliced bread for this review simply because it was the one with the lowest net-carb count my local store had available.

It definitely looks and feels like any ordinary slice of sandwich bread but I thought the slices were a little on the small size. I also found the taste a little too sweet and it hit my blood sugar pretty hard, which just didnt work for me, so I dont see myself buying this again.

The bread is a wheat and seed bread and also has a few grams of added sugar so it wont work for those looking to avoid gluten.

This is not the bread with the lowest carb count but it has been a staple of mine for years. It has a mild almost nutty flavor and it toats and smells just like a whole grain muffin.

Its made completely out of sprouted grains without any flour so it has a lower glycemic index than regular bread . That means that it should give less of a blood sugar spike than regular bread as it gets converted into glucose in the bloodstream slower. However, I often notice a relatively steep blood sugar impact when I eat this bread.

The serving size is the only other thing that really bothers me about this bread, as a serving is only ½ a muffin.

What Is The Glycemic Index

The American Diabetes Association explain that the GI compares the way foods raise blood sugar levels compared with a reference food, usually glucose.

Glucose is a reference point for the GI with a score of 100. White bread would score around 71.

Foods that do not contain carbohydrates, such as meats and fats, do not have a GI score.

Low-glycemic foods score 55 or less and include:

  • 100-percent stone-ground whole-wheat or pumpernickel bread
  • oatmeal

Medium-glycemic foods score 56 to 69 and include:

  • whole wheat, rye, and pita bread
  • quick oats
  • brown, wild, or basmati rice
  • couscous

High-glycemic foods score 70 or more and include:

  • foods made with refined grains, such as white bread, bagels, pretzels, saltine crackers, and many breakfast cereals
