Tips For Buying Vinegar And Oil

Type 2 Diabetes Treatment | Symptoms | Diet | Salad Dressings

When buying vinegar, look for apple cider vinegar that is raw, organic and unpasteurized, says Dr. Todorov. Or find red wine vinegar with 5 to 6% acidity.

And make sure the label on your olive oil says extra-virgin. If it says only olive oil, the product is a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil and refined oil, she says.

You also want cold-pressed EVOO. The ripe olives have been mechanically pressed, without heat, so it is rich in polyphenols. These are typically lost in the processing of refined vegetable oils, explains Dr. Todorov.

So, the next time you grab a salad, do your health a favor. Try replacing that creamy dressing with EVOO and apple cider or red wine vinegar.

Not All Dressings Are Equal

If you’re using store-bought salad dressings, get used to the idea of reading the labels. Carbohydrate counting is one of the strategies recommended by the American Diabetes Association for regulating your food intake, controlling your blood sugar and, if you take insulin, making sure you get the right amount.

Those labels in the salad dressing aisle are a good place to start: Even “light” salad dressings can contain several grams of carbohydrate per 1- or 2-tablespoon serving and many people use a lot more than that on their salads without realizing they’re exceeding the recommended serving size. The ADA describes 2 tablespoons as a standard serving for salad dressing although some labels might list nutrition facts for a 1-tablespoon serving, so always check the listed serving size.

The carbohydrate section of your salad dressing label will also list any added sugars, which are part of the total carbohydrate count. Added sugar, or a long list of barely comprehensible ingredients, are good clues that a particular salad dressing might not be for you.

When you shop for salad dressing, the ADA recommends vinaigrettes for the most frequent consumption. Watch out for super-creamy dressings such as ranch and bleu cheese the ADA lists these as foods to avoid and limit your intake of low-fat creamy dressings, such as light ranch, to occasional treats.

The Best Salad Dressings for People with Diabetes

If youre concerned about weight loss, dressing advertised as low in fat may sound healthier than regular dressing, but it is really quite the opposite. Most processed low-fat foods replace fat with extra sweeteners to maintain the flavor, so you may be getting less fat in your dressing but you may be getting more sugar.

For example, a serving of regular ranch dressing contains 1.77 grams of carbs while the fat-free version of ranch contains 7.42 grams of total carbohydrate.

Fats are an important part of a well-rounded diet , so low fat isnt necessarily a positive. Additionally, the healthy fats in a dressing can be beneficial because the fat-soluble vitamins from the veggies in your salad need fats in order to be absorbed and stored in the body.

Vitamins A, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins found in spinach, carrots, cabbage, and dark leafy greens. Pairing these kinds of veggies with a healthy fat like olive oil is the best way to get the most nutrition out of your meal.
