Apples And The Glycemic Index

The glycemic index compares foods according to the likelihood of them causing blood sugar spikes. Foods score between 0100, with water having the lowest and glucose the highest score.

The body absorbs carbohydrates and sugars quickly from foods with a high GI score, such as candies. The carbs from foods with a low GI score enter the bloodstream more slowly, and so there is a lower risk of a blood sugar spike.

Cornflakes, for example, score around 81 on the GI, depending on the brand and type. This is a high score. Apples score around 36. This is a low score.

Altogether, apples may have a relatively low impact on the insulin and blood sugar levels in the body. This makes them a suitable fruit for people with diabetes, in moderation.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits is beneficial for everyone, and certain fruits provide more benefits than others, particularly for a person with a chronic health condition.

    Can Diabetics Eat Applesauce

    Related Articles

Diabetics should continue to eat fruit as part of a healthy diet, according to the American Diabetes Association, since fruit provides fiber and a number of essential vitamins and minerals. While diabetics can eat applesauce, it isn’t necessarily the best fruit option as other fruit choices can be more filling and contain fewer carbohydrates.

Tips For Meeting Your Daily Fat And Protein Goals

    Remove empty carbs

Refined bread, cookies, pasta, and sweetened drinks will spike your blood sugar quickly and dont offer the nutrition and energy boost youd get from fruit.

    Increase plant protein

Higher-fat animal protein sources are linked to insulin resistance, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and obesity. Look for alternative sources like tofu, beans, and all-natural peanut butter when possible.

    Meal-prep

each week means youll always have healthy, balanced meals within reach.

Get creative with ways to add fruit to your meals, too. Examples include berries on top of oatmeal, citrus squeezed onto fish, and a fruit sauce made with berries to go over chicken.

How Much Fruit Should I Eat

Most guidelines recommend that adults and children eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. This does not change for people with diabetes.

The United States guidelines recommend that people fill half of their plate at each meal with fruits and vegetables.

People with diabetes should focus on non-starchy vegetables for 50 percent of the meal, rather than depending on fruit. The remaining half of the meal should be protein and high-fiber starches like beans or whole grains. Many experts also recommend including healthy fat at each meal to encourage feeling full and enhance absorption of antioxidants and vitamins.

One serving is a medium-sized fruit, or a serving the size of a baseball. Smaller fruits, such as berries, have one-cup as the serving size.

A half-cup is also the serving size for processed fruit products, such as applesauce and fruit juice. The serving for fried fruits like raisins and cherries is 2 tablespoons per serving size.

Like vegetables, its great for people to eat a variety of fruits to get their needed nutrients, as well as to enjoy their varied flavors.

To achieve the desired five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, people should aim to have fruit or vegetables throughout the day.

Here are a few ideas to help with menu planning:

Some Brands Are High In Sugar

Many commercial applesauces are sweetened with added sugars that may lower the nutritional value of the applesauce.

Added sugars not only increase the sugar content of applesauce but also add more calories.

In fact, sweetened applesauce may contain up to 15 more grams of sugar and 60 more calories per serving than unsweetened varieties (

    ).

While eating sweetened applesauce may lead to consuming too much added sugar, a person would need to eat large quantities of sweetened applesauce to experience these negative health effects.

Its more likely for a person to experience weight gain and an increased risk of chronic disease from consuming foods that deliver a lot more added sugar per serving, such as sugar-sweetened beverages.

To make sure applesauce benefits your health, read the label and choose a variety with low or no added sugar.

Choosing an applesauce sweetened with a low calorie sweetener may help moderate your calorie intake and ward off weight gain in the short term. Examples of low calorie sweeteners include stevia, sucralose, and saccharin.

Theres no current evidence that eating applesauce sweetened with a small amount of low calorie sweetener would cause any health issues (

    ).

Furthermore, eating whole apples that are higher in fiber may feel more satisfying.

One small study found that adults who consumed whole apples reported feeling fuller than when they consumed applesauce or apple juice .

Not My Favorite Applesauce But Good

I think that this applesauce is pretty good. It has a good flavor to it. I wouldn’t buy it all the time, but every now and then I will find myself picking up a jar of this. I do like that it’s unsweetened. I know some people don’t like the taste of unsweetened, but I think that it’s pretty good. I would rather go for an organic applesauce though. Even though this applesauce is labeled natural they still spray pesticides and chemicals on their fruit. I guess that I feel like I will choose this product to be healthier and then still put unhealthy stuff into my body. I understand why some people would buy this though. Saying that the taste and texture of this applesauce is still good. My kids and family like it when I have it in the house. I know these jars of applesauce are pretty inexpensive, so that is a plus. I’m pretty sure that I remember there being different size jars also, which is nice because you can get more for your money. All in all it’s not too bad of an applesauce. It’s just not my favorite. I would just rather go with something different.

    Low In Vitamins And Minerals

A 1/2-cup serving of applesauce only provides 14% of the Reference Daily Intake for the vitamins and minerals it contains .

Manufacturers often add extra vitamin C to commercially made applesauce to help preserve the color.

Homemade applesauce could also be higher in vitamin C if either lemon juice or other fruits that contain vitamin C are added.

Applesauce provides a limited amount of vitamins and minerals. Therefore, consuming a variety of other fruits and vegetables in combination with applesauce will help ensure a nutritionally balanced diet.

    Should You Avoid Fruit Juices

A person with diabetes should be able to consume fruit juices that contain 100 percent real fruit.

However, depending on how their blood glucose levels react, the individual may need to limit their intake, as fruit juices may contain a higher concentration of sugar and less fiber than fresh fruits.

This can cause a higher spike in blood sugar.

Four ounces of fruit juice contains about 15 g of carbohydrates. Being mindful of total carbohydrate intake during the meal is important for managing diabetes. A person should include fruit juice in their carbohydrate tracking.

Fruit juices with added sugars are not suitable. Some fruit juices may start as fruit, but the process of turning them into juice may remove much of the fiber and nutrients. What is left after processing is often higher in both sugar and calories than the fruit itself.

Other fruit juices contain little to no real fruit. Reading the ingredients and focusing on 100 percent real juices is crucial to ensure a higher nutrient intake.

Diabetes Diet: Should I Avoid Sweet Fruits

I’ve heard that you shouldn’t eat sweet fruits such as strawberries or blueberries if you have diabetes. Is this true? Answers from M. Regina Castro, M.D. It’s a common myth that if you have diabetes you shouldn’t eat certain foods because they’re “too sweet.” Some fruits do contain more sugar than others, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat them if you have diabetes. The total amount of carbohydrates in a food affects blood sugar levels more than does the source of carbohydrates or whether the source is a starch or sugar. One serving of fruit should contain 15 grams of carbohydrates. The size of the serving depends on the carbohydrate content of the fruit. The advantage of eating a low-carbohydrate fruit is that you can consume a larger portion. But whether you eat a low-carb or high-carb fruit, as long as the serving size contains 15 grams of carbohydrates, the effect on your blood sugar is the same. The following fruit servings contain about 15 grams of carbohydrates: 1/2 medium apple or banana 1 cup blackberries 3/4 cup blueberries 1 cup raspberries 1 1/4 cup whole strawberries 1 cup cubed cantaloupe or honeydew melonContinue reading >>
