How Refrigerating Conditions Differ For Different Insulin Types
Its important to remember that these refrigerating temperatures will vary depending on different factors like brand, type, and even whether or not insulin is in use or not.
As a good example, an unopened disposable insulin pen can be kept outside at room temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit for a maximum of 4 weeks. And when refrigerating, it has to be kept between 35.6 and 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit until expiry.
An opened disposable insulin pen will last for only four weeks maximum regardless of the temperature it is stored in. So, its important to remember that merely refrigerating will not make insulin more effective or last longer.
When it comes to types, its said that rapid-acting insulins spoil faster than the regular insulins. For example, rapid-acting insulin, like Humalog and spoil more quickly than regular and NPH insulins. Its always recommended to keep these insulins under refrigeration from the start or as early as possible. As always, if in any doubt, consult your doctor.

Managing Diabetes Without Taking Insulin
A common treatment for diabetes is insulin injections. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to keep taking insulin to make up for deficiencies in natural levels. For patients with type 2 diabetes, however, insulin injections may only be temporary.
Added pounds increase your insulin resistance. You can work to manage your blood sugar levels by losing weight, eating right, and getting and staying active. If you can get your blood sugar under control through diet and exercise, you may not need to continue using insulin or oral diabetes medications, or may be able to use a significantly reduced dosage.
If you have untreated or poorly controlled diabetes, you might only need insulin injections for a few days or weeks to support your pancreas until it can overcome glucose toxicity and return to normal functioning. Then, oral medications may be enough to manage your diabetes.
How Insulin Medicine Is Made
Insulin is made in different ways. You and your healthcare team will discuss which insulin you can take.
- Human insulin this is synthetic and made in a laboratory to be like insulin made in the body.

When You Run Out Of Insulin

Let us start with the physical process that sets in when there is not enough insulin in the body. In this case severe hyperglycemia sets in very quickly. High blood sugar leads to DKA or diabetic ketoacidosis which if left untreated can lead to death.
Insulin helps sugar to be used by cells for fuel. Without insulin, there is not enough sugar in the cells to function properly. In this case the liver turns the body fat into acids called ketones. When excess ketones get into the bloodstream, blood becomes acidic and causes DKA.DKA is a combination of very high blood sugar, dehydration, shock and exhaustion. The symptoms of DKA include vomiting and hyperventilation. The person goes into a coma. If left untreated it eventually leads to death. In general cases, the first signs of DKA emerge when blood glucose level remains north of 300 mg/dL for about four hours. The point of things getting out of hand at this time is highly variable. Some people may fall ill immediately while some may wander in a daze for a number of days. Any residual blood sugar in the system can hold off DKA even when blood sugar levels are high.
If Long Term/basal Insulin Was Forgotten
If you forget to take your long term insulin and you realise relatively soon, it should usually be fine to inject your usual dose if the dose is given within 2 hours of when it should have been done.
In this case, youll need to be aware that the injection was taken later and so the insulin will also be active in your body later than it would usually be. In some cases this could increase the chance of hypoglycaemia so speak to your health team if you have any doubts.
If it has been longer than 2 hours since your injection should have been taken and you are not sure what to do, speak to your health team who will be able to advise you. It is important not to delay getting advice as your blood glucose levels may begin rising to dangerous levels
If your blood glucose levels are high when you notice you have missed a dose, you may need to take short acting or rapid acting insulin to lower your blood glucose levels. If you are at all unsure of what dose to take, seek advice from your healthcare team.

Can I Give My Cat Insulin Once A Day
Diabetic cats may be maintained on once-a-day injection, although some cats may be better controlled with twice-a- day injection. It appears that glargine insulin is particularly useful in the treatment of the newly diagnosed, diabetic cat as some of these cats are able to achieve a diabetic remission.
What Can You Do To Prevent Or Slow Dka
First of all, be aware of the symptoms, if any. Our own DiabetesMine correspondent Wil Dubois, who landed in the hospital with DKA last year, writes:
The main symptoms of DKA that were told to watch for other than those associated with high blood sugar in the first place, like crazy thirst and peeing like a race horse are nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, fruity-smelling breath, rapid breathing, and confusion.
Of course, you cant smell your own breath. If you are confused you probably dont know it. And most people arent aware of their respiration rate. So the main warning sign of impending DKA that all type 1s are taught to be alert for is the union of nausea and abdominal pain in the presence of high blood sugar. And I never had any. Nausea or pain, but clearly as my doctor noted, I was experiencing DKA.
If you know that you have missed a shot or are running low / rationing insulin, its a good idea to keep very close tabs on your blood sugar readings and keep ketone test strips handy.

How long can a type 1 diabetic go without any insulin at all?
I got diagnosed like 6 weeks ago, and have been taking my insulin ever day since then.
But I been a little depressed lately, and just haven’t taken any insulin at all today.
And this got me wondering, how long could one last without insulin??
I know before I was diagnosed, I think I was diabetic for a while, until I eventually went into ketoacidosis and found out I’m a type 1. but does that mean before I DKAed my pancreas was dying?? and it finally quit on me when I went to the hospital. or was it straight up dead a while ago, and I just went into DKA??

Hey Johnny I was Diagnosed in March of this year T1 in honeymoon stage ,I was taking shots but now on the pump. They told me that the longest I can go with out insulin is two hours.

If you dont eat anything and only drink water you might make it a week but that would about it. If you eat anything a couple days and you will be out cold.
It took me about 32 hours to go into and through DKA and into a Coma. Bad way to go. I forgot my Insilin except I had basal in me from the night before.

How Long Can A Type 1 Diabetic Live Without Insulin
Skipping insulin as a Type 1 diabetic is much more dangerous. If a person has been recently diagnosed, they may still have some insulin in their body that will allow them to go a few days or even a week before succumbing to DKA. However, some Type 1 diabetics, particularly children or teenagers, are so dependent on insulin injections that they may show signs of DKA in less than a day.

Diabetic remission occurs when a cat maintains a normal glucose level for more than four weeks without insulin injections or oral glucose regulating medications. The primary goal of treating diabetes is to regulate blood glucose quickly and reach a point where the cat no longer needs insulin therapy.
When Is It Necessary To Call A Doctor If You Have Diabetes
- If you have diabetes and your blood sugar is 300 mg/dL or higher two times in a row for an unknown reason.
- If you have a low blood sugar that has not come up after three treatments, call your healthcare provider or 911.
- If you see a person with diabetes who appears confused, they may be having a low blood sugar episode. Left untreated, the low blood sugar could lead to a diabetic coma. If the person is still able to follow instructions, give him or her something to drink or eat and call for an ambulance or 911.
- If you see someone with diabetes become unresponsive, call 911.
If you do call 911, let the responders know that the person has diabetes if theyre not able to communicate. If you do have diabetes, you may want to wear a medical identification item like a bracelet or necklace.
When you are taken to a healthcare facility, providers will do a physical examination and take blood to determine levels of glucose, ketones and other substances.
