What Are Other Cool Treats Someone Can Consider
Dark chocolate is full of anti-oxidants and can serve as a nice palate cleanser at the end of the meal. Nampudripad recommends developing a taste for very dark chocolate , which often has only 1-2 grams of sugar per serving. It can be quite nice when paired with some cinnamon tea or decaf coffee at the end of a meal, she suggests.
You can also make a cashew cream which is a luxurious and delicious alternative to whipped cream at home. There are some great recipes to choose from online.
Cashews are naturally free of sugar but do have a lot of carbohydrates, so enjoy a small portion with freshly sliced and grilled peaches, topped with some toasted pecans and cinnamon.
At least, this home-made dessert is made of all whole food ingredients, is free of chemicals, and you can control the sugar content, Nampudripad points out.
What Is The Recommended Ice Cream Serving Size
Its best to limit to one small scoop, Nampudripad says. She reminds us that the more you consume, the more your body will crave.
She recommends buying small, fancy ice-cream bowls or cups. That way your tiny scoop will appear just perfect, she says. You can bulk up your ice cream with toasted nut toppings, unsweetened coconut flakes or some fresh berries.
This way you will be satisfied with a smaller portion of ice cream and the healthier toppings will help to fill you up, she says.
How Does Chocolate Affect Blood Sugar
As you wonder whether cocoa is good for diabetes, the first question may be how chocolate affects blood sugar. Happily, chocolate has a low glycemic index , which means it does not lead to sharp spikes in blood sugar when you eat it. This is likely because of its high amount of fat and fiber, both of which slow digestion. Milk chocolate and sugar-sweetened dark chocolate have a higher GI than unsweetened chocolate, but are still lower-GI than high-sugar, high-starch, low-fiber treats such as cake and syrup.
There is more good news about chocolate and your blood sugar. It may improve the very problems that lead to type 2 diabetes. Eating chocolate may increase insulin sensitivity. It may also stimulate the beta cells in your pancreas to release insulin. Both of these actions can lead to lower blood sugar. In fact, eating chocolate with a meal may lead to a lower blood sugar spike.

Summertime, for most, is a time to indulge in cool and tempting treats like ice cream, but it may not be that easy for someone with type 2 diabetes. However, its empowering to know that satisfying your sweet-tooth doesnt have to be completely off limits.
We sat down with Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad, an integrative health specialist to get her scoop on ice cream, including what to look for in the ice creams you buy, how to safely integrate them into your diet and the best alternatives.
Luna & Larrys Coconut Bliss
Coconut Bliss is an organic, vegan and gluten-free frozen dessert company that is for the most part, sugar-free. Rather than white sugar, the company uses either coconut sugar or agave syrup in their 16-pint flavors. The only flavors that you should avoid on a sugar-free diet are the sea salt caramel, sea salt caramel and chocolate and mint chip galactic, which include cane sugar. Luna & Larrys ice cream would fit in great with this 7-day sugar-free meal plan.

So Delicious Dairyfree Coconut Sandwiches
Sweetened with organic cane sugar, tapioca syrup, and brown rice syrup, you won’t find any artificial sweeteners in this dessert. Cassetty also appreciates that the sandwiches have just 7 grams of sugar, which she notes is “super reasonable for a treat,” and likes that they’re individually wrapped.
“This means there’s no guessing how much is in a suggested serving,” she says.
Arctic Zero Cookie Dough Chunk
Net carbs: 11 g
Calories per serving: 80
Review score: 3 stars
This ice cream is non-dairy which might be why the consistency was a little icy and never became the smooth consistency Id expect from good ice cream. When you look at the ingredients, the first one is water, which could explain the ice-crystal feel of the ice cream.
I do enjoy a good cookie dough ice cream, and its hard to mess up cookie dough. And the Artic zero cookie dough chunks are good but unfortunately, the ice cream base is somewhat bland and has a bit of a weird aftertaste I cant really put my finger on.
The ice cream is sweetened with both cane sugar, brown sugar, and molasses, which means it will have a blood sugar impact. For some reason, theyve also chosen to add monk fruit sweetener so its not all high glycemic sweeteners.
The fat content is fairly low and so is the protein which makes it a relatively low-calorie low-carb ice cream option so it might be a good option for people looking for a lower calorie non-dairy option who dont mind a small blood sugar impact.

Ice cream is often high in saturated fat due to the cream and fat content. However, Nampudripad says in diabetes, the main problem is sugar and carbohydrates. It’s getting warmer outside and pretty soon it’ll be ice cream weather. But can you still enjoy frozen desserts if you have diabetes?
Happily, the answer is yes: You can eat frozen desserts occasionally if you substitute them for other carbohydrates in your meal plan. The following tips from the American Diabetes Association can help you choose:
- Watch the serving size . If you eat more, double or triple the nutrient information to keep your count accurate.

How Else Does Chocolate Affect Your Health
A lot of research has looked at chocolate consumption and health, especially heart health. Most of the findings are positive. That is especially good news if you have diabetes, since diabetes is a risk factor for heart disease and related conditions. Various studies have linked chocolate consumption to lower blood pressure, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels, and lower levels of unhealthy inflammation, according to a review article published in Antioxidants and Redox Signaling. Many studies have included people with diabetes.
It is however of note that women who are pregnant should avoid chocolate, particularly if you have gestational diabetes.
