Is Skippy Peanut Butter Good For Diabetics

How Peanut Butter Affects Blood Sugar

Skippy Recalls Peanut Butter That May Contain Steel Fragments

Peanut butter without any added sugar has a low glycemic index of 13 and only 6 grams of carbs per serving, so it only has a small effect on blood sugars .

However, peanut butter is rarely eaten alone. Its often paired with carbohydrates like oatmeal, apples, or toast.

When painting peanut butter with a sweeter snack, like an apple, the blood sugar spike is delayed because the fat and protein in the peanut butter slow down the digestion of the carbohydrates from the apple.

So combining carbohydrates with peanut butter actually makes your blood sugar spike less than if you ate only the carbohydrates.

If you manage your diabetes with oral medications or diet and exercise, the flatter blood sugar curve is great news, as it makes it easier to keep your blood sugar stable throughout the day.

If you manage your diabetes with insulin, adding peanut butter to your diet can also be beneficial, but you need to adjust your insulin dosing to match the flatter blood sugar curve.

How To Store Natural Peanut Butter

Standard big-brand peanut butters will last in the dark, cool pantry for about six to nine months closed or two to three months once opened. Refrigerating it extends its shelf life, but the cold definitely makes it less spreadable.

Natural peanut butter is even less spreadable when cold, since its unrefined and contains nothing but ground peanuts and sometimes salt without preservatives or hydrogenated oils to make it extra smooth. Many brands advise refrigerating it after opening, but natural peanut butter can last up to a month on a cool, dark shelf.

If youll likely devour the whole jar within a month, feel free to leave it at room temperature. If it takes you longer to finish, keep it in the fridge for up to six months instead so the oils dont spoil. Just be sure to stir the separated oil back into the peanut butter between usesits tougher to reincorporate once the PB gets cold and hard.

How To Make Peanut Butter A Healthier Snack If You Have Diabetes

Is Skippy Natural Peanut Butter Healthy? Review 2021

Peanut butter is a great, filling snack, but its fat and protein load can make it hard to bolus insulin. Ways to make that easier include:

Opt for eating peanut butter with lower carbohydrate foods, like unsweetened Greek yogurt, in protein shakes, or with celery sticks and carrots. When paired with heart-healthy foods, eating peanut butter has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in women with type 2 diabetes!

Eat peanut butter earlier in the day, so you dont experience delayed high blood sugar while youre asleep.

One study found that eating peanut butter at breakfast helped to not only curb appetite for the rest of the day, but it kept blood sugars stable throughout the course of a day, as well! This is in part due to the heart-healthy magnesium found in peanut butter.

Experiment with different bolusing schemes if youre on an insulin pump, or break your dose into two, if youre only multiple daily injections

Choose all-natural peanut butter varieties, where the only ingredients are peanuts. Avoid honey-roasted varieties, that have sugar and sweeteners added

If youre looking to lose weight, limit portion sizes, as peanut butter is not a low-calorie snack!

Does Skippy Peanut Butter Have Partially Hydrogenated Oil

Skippy ingredients.

Skippy peanut butter does not have partially hydrogenated oil or trans fat. However, it does contain fully hydrogenated oil, which is still a highly processed ingredient.

In normal Skippy peanut butter, whether Creamy or Extra Chunky, they use hydrogenated vegetable oil to prevent separation. The word hydrogenated has long been a red flag in ingredient listsbecause partially hydrogenated oils contain trans fat.

Trans fat is known to be the worst kind of fat, even worse than saturated fat. Here is a page from the American Heart Association on why trans fat is so unhealthy.

Trans fat raises your LDL cholesterol, while lowering your HDL cholesterol and increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

However, in recent years, the FDA banned partially hydrogenated oils. So, nowadays, what you get in Skippy and other peanut butter is fully hydrogenated vegetable oils, mixed with other vegetable oils.

This means Skippy today does not contain trans fat. That said, some people still worry about the hydrogenated oil in Skippy. Its a very processed ingredientthats for sure. I wrote a bit more about it in my post about Crisco.

If youre concerned about the hydrogenated oils in Skippy peanut butter, you can switch to Skippy Natural. Skippy Natural does not contain hydrogenated oils.

Is Skippy Or Peter Pan Healthier

Skippy and Peter Pan peanut butter are about equally healthy. Skippy has slightly more sugar and sodium, but Peter Pan has slightly more saturated fat and calories. They have the same amount of protein and fiber, as well as the same ingredients.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the original, creamy flavor of Jif versus the original, creamy flavor of Skippy:

  • Sugar: Peter Pan wins . Both brands have 3g of total sugars per serving. But according to the labels, Peter Pan has only 2g of added sugar, while Skippy has 3g. So Peter Pan may be a bit better here.
  • Saturated Fat:Skippy wins . Skippy has 3g of saturated fat per serving, while Peter Pan has 3.5g. Again, this is very close, so its not a big difference.
  • Sodium:Peter Pan wins. Peter Pan only has 125mg of sodium per serving, while Skippy has 150mg. This makes Peter Pans original flavor the lowest in sodium when compared to Skippy and Jif.
  • Calories: Skippy wins . Skippy has 190 calories per serving, while Peter Pan has 200. If youre trying to keep your calories low, then Skippy may be a slightly better choice.
  • Fiber:Tie. Both Skippy and Peter Pan have 2 grams of dietary fiber per serving.
  • Protein:Peter Pan wins . Skippy has 7 grams of protein per serving, but Peter Pan has 8g per serving. So if youre looking for high protein, Peter Pan may be a bit better.
  • Ingredients:Tie. Skippy and Peter Pan have the same listed ingredients. No real difference here.

Best Type 2 Diabetes Snacks

Healthy Combinations Ready in Minutes When you have type 2 diabetes, a smart strategy for controlling your blood sugar levels is to think of snacks as miniature versions of meals and plan your carbs accordingly. Snacks with a good mix of protein, fat, and fiber will help keep hunger at bay and your blood sugar on an even keel throughout the day. “Since a meal should include 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates, a snack should have around 15 to 20 grams,” says Katherine Basbaum, MS, RD, a clinical dietitian in the Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation departments at University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville. What Are Some Benefits Of Peanut Butter

There are many benefits of peanut butter beyond it being the perfect spread for the easiest sandwich: PB& J.

“Peanut butter is a convenient and affordable source of healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, plant-based protein, fiber, and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc,” says registered dietitian Elle Penner, MPH, RD, of Modern Minimalism.

“In addition to being satiating, peanut butter with no added sugar is a relatively low-carbohydrate food and does not have a significant impact on blood sugar. Studies show that people who regularly include nuts, including peanut butter, in their diets are less likely to develop heart disease or type 2 diabetes than those who rarely eat nuts.”
