A trial is being done to test the effectiveness of soaking bandages in a low concentration of acetic acid before they are applied to severe burns.

An October 2018 study published in Antioxidants explains that balsamic vinegar derived from red grapes has the highest amount of antioxidants present, which are known to decrease the incidence of cancer and lower the risk of heart disease. The antiglycemic effect of vinegar was first reported by Ebihara and Nakajima in 1988. In rats, the blood glucose response to a 10% corn starch load was significantly reduced when coadministered with a 2% acetic acid solution. In healthy human subjects, although the glucose response curve was not significantly altered, the area under the insulin response curve following the ingestion of 50 g sucrose was reduced 20% when coadministered with 60 mL strawberry vinegar. Several years later, Brighenti and colleagues demonstrated in normoglycemic subjects that 20 mL white vinegar as a salad dressing ingredient reduced the glycemic response to a mixed meal by over 30% . Salad dressings made from neutralized vinegar, formulated by adding 1.5 g sodium bicarbonate to 20 mL white vinegar, or a salt solution did not significantly affect the glycemic response to the mixed meal. Separate placebo-controlled trials have corroborated the meal-time, antiglycemic effects of 20 g vinegar in healthy adults.
The marked antiglycemic effect of vinegar in insulin-resistant subjects is noteworthy and may have important implications. Vinegar has been used for millennia as a food, drink, medicinal, preservative, and disinfectant. Fruit juices are fermented with yeast into wine, which is further fermented by acetic acid bacteria into vinegar. Various types of vinegar are made from apples , grapes , cereals such as barley , sugar, and other products. Distilled vinegar is made from dilute distilled alcohol.
The US Food and Drug administration requires products labelled “vinegar” to contain at least 4% acetic acid. Cider and wine vinegars contain 5% to 6% acetic acid white vinegar ranges from 4% to 7%.
Vinegar has been used as a folk remedy for various conditions, including hypertension, weight loss, leg cramps, osteoarthritis, cancer prevention, jelly fish stings, and warts. Before the availability of pharmacologic glucose-lowering therapy, vinegar was used as a home remedy for diabetes.
The limited available research suggests that vinegar taken before a meal may lower blood glucose from 20% to 33%. The response may depend on the type of glucose loadthat is, a more pronounced response with a high-glycemic vs low-glycemic meal or glucose-containing beverage.
