Tips On Using Insulin Pen Needles

There are a number of tips that insulin pen users typically pick up on pretty quickly once theyve started use:

  • Quick stab. Many of us think that slowly easing the needle into the skin can make it hurt less, but thats not the case. It tends to hurt or at least be a bit more uncomfortable doing that. Just jab it into your skin, like youd rip a Band-Aid off quickly.
  • Straight in, out. 90-degree angles are best. When inserting and removing from skin, dont twist the needle to any angle other than that, or youll find that it hurts.
  • Room temp insulin. Most insulins, especially the long-acting basal insulins, can burn a bit upon injection if the liquid is cold, like when just removed from a refrigerator. If you can, let your insulin pen warm up a bit to room temperature before injecting.
  • Relax. An instinct that many of us have when injecting is to clench or hold our breath, but healthcare professionals often point out how important it is to not tense up. Rather, take a deep breath or two before injecting. The more relaxed you are, the less youll feel the needle.
  • Rotating sites. If we use the same spot on the skin too much, scar tissue can develop. So, keep track of where you inject insulin and rotate the sites accordingly. You can even find accessories like injection site temporary tattoos to help keep track of those spots.

Insulin Without Prescription Requires Patient Education

In 1922, the first insulin was made available for human use. The discovery and use of insulin revolutionized diabetes treatment and improved life for people with the disease, especially type 1. Nearly 95 years later, insulin remains the mainstay of treatment for type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes, as well as for many people with type 2 diabetes.

Wealth of available products

Since then, the evolution of insulin continues to advance. There are currently at least 15 insulin products in the U.S. market, with more in the pipeline. During the past century, new formations and delivery systems have improved the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug and ease of use for patients. In the past year alone, the introduction of concentrated or low volume insulins has increased the choices available.

It is known that insulin analogues provide longer and shorter durations of actions that more closely mimic normal insulin secretion in response to fasting and prandial needs. In comparison with neutral protamine Hagedorn, or NPH, long-acting insulin analogues are associated with a lower incidence of hypoglycemia. In addition, regular human insulin has a slower onset and longer duration of action compared with rapid-acting insulin analogues, resulting in less postprandial control and increased frequency of hypoglycemia.

Gauges And Needle Length

The measurements of needles relate to how long the needle is. When a needles measurement is 31G, the G refers to the gauge of the needle. This donates the thickness, size, or capacity.

The gauge and needle length will contribute to perceptions of pain when injecting.

The longer the needle is, the harder it is to pressurise the insulin through so it needs a bigger hole down the middle.

5 Steps to Using An Insulin Pen Correctly

If you are a diabetic you may have heard conflicting information on whether or not you require a prescription to pick up insulin from a pharmacy.

When isnt a prescription required?

In Alberta, insulin can be sold to a patient without a prescription. Insulin is in the Schedule 2 drug class. Schedule 2 medications can only be sold in a pharmacy, and they must be kept behind the pharmacy counter. In order to sell a schedule 2 medication, the pharmacist must set up a complete patient profile and ensure the medication is appropriate for the patient.

While insulin is considered schedule 2, it is in this schedule in case of emergency. This means that if you are traveling and run out of insulin, or cant get in to see your doctor, the pharmacist can maintain your current insulin therapy without sending you to a walk in clinic or emergency. The pharmacist must document the sale of the insulin on your profile, along with any information that helped the pharmacist determine the insulin was appropriate.

When is a prescription required?

The majority of the time a pharmacist will not sell insulin without a prescription. The reasons for this are as follows.

  • Your drug plan will not cover the cost of the insulin without a prescription from your doctor.
  • Your doctor, or a pharmacist with additional prescribing rights must originally write a prescription for a particular type of insulin and at a certain dosage.

You Can Buy Insulin Without A Prescription But Should You

As anyone who needs insulin to treat diabetes can tell you, that usually means regular checkups at the doctors office to fine-tune the dosage, monitor blood-sugar levels and check for complications. But heres a little known fact: Some forms of insulin can be bought without a prescription.

Carmen Smith did that for six years when she didnt have health insurance, and didnt have a primary care doctor. She bought her insulin without a prescription at Wal-Mart.

Its not like we go in our trench coat and a top hat, saying, Uh I need the insulin,’ says Smith, who lives in Cleveland. The clerks usually dont know its a big secret. Theyll just go, Do we sell over-the-counter insulin?’

Once the pharmacist says yes, the clerk just goes to get it, Smith says. And you purchase it and go about your business.

But its still a pretty uncommon purchase.

Smith didnt learn from a doctor that she could buy insulin that way. In fact, many doctors dont know its possible. When she no longer had insurance to help pay for doctors appointments or medicine, Smith happened to ask at Wal-Mart if she could get vials of the medicine without a prescription. To figure out the dose, she just used the same amount a doctor had given her years before.

It was a way to survive, she says, but no way to live. It was horrible when she didnt get the size of the dose or the timing quite right.

Require A Prescription For Otc Insulin Needles

Over the counter sales of needles from any pharmacy needs to be stopped. Anyone 18 and over can walk into a pharmacy and purchase needles that are often used by Heroin addicts. It is way too easy for Heroin users to obtain them. Up to 90% of IV Heroin users will contract Hepatitis. Rarely, some pharmacists will require an Insulin prescription, but users will just drive to the next pharmacy. We are asking for this to change!! We need laws to regulate the easy sale of Insulin needles. It should be a requirement to have a legal prescription for Insulin to be able to purchase AND possess Insulin needles.

Many Heroin users dont start out as IV users. After time they seek a stronger high as the tolerance builds, which leads to IV use. If these needles were not to easy to get, we believe it could stop alot of users from going down this path.

Dispensing Insulin And Other Injectable Diabetes Meds

Insulin isa hormone secreted by the pancreas. Ithelps the body use glucose as an energy source by acting like a keythat allows glucose to enter the bodys tissues. People with diabetes either dont produce insulin or dont use available insulin properlyor make enough insulin . Withoutthe right amounts or proper functioning of insulin, glucose builds up in theblood and other organs and causes tissue damage or death. Although type 2 diabetes can often be managedwith oral medications, many type 2 patients and all type 1 patients willrequire injections of insulin.

Thereare many types of insulin available to meet patients individual needs, such asthe traditional versions with 100 units/mL of insulin, called U-100. There are also some concentrated versionsthat have 200 units/mL , 300 units/mL , or 500 units/mL .

Thereare also other injectable drugs used to treat diabetes besides insulin. They include exenatide , exenatide extended-release , liraglutide , lixisenatide, dulaglutide , and semaglutide . These GLP-1 agonist meds help increase thebodys own natural secretion of insulin.Pramlintide isanother injectable diabetes med. Ithelps reduce blood glucose in a different way than increasing insulin levels.

    Stigma: Experienced And Internalized

    How to Inject INSULIN

Just treat everybody like you treat the nice elderly woman whos picking up her arthritis medication.

The most frequent experience reported in the pharmacy while trying to purchase syringes was of stigma in the form of discrimination or judgment expressed by the pharmacy staff. Participants did not differentiate whether stigma was expressed by pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, or both, though it was clear that the person at the counter receiving the request for the syringes enacted the first behavioral response. Participants felt that the expressed stigmatizing behavior was syringe-related because the behavior occurred as soon as they asked for syringes. Pharmacy staff behavior was described as a demeanor change following syringe request.

werent so cold to you instantly. Cause theyre like, Hey, how can I help you? Oh hey, Im here to get some syringes. Oh okay, hold on one minute. Then it all gets dark, especially if you had to do it directly with a pharmacist.

Participants felt that staff judgment was not necessarily focused on the syringes, per se, because they noted that others purchased syringes for more socially acceptable uses such as diabetes or for medicating their pets. Instead, participants believed that pharmacy staff judged their drug use.

At least Im trying to be safe about it, rather than just, using whatever. But you guys would be a lot more pissed off if there was a giant HIV epidemic, or something, over selling syringes to people.
