Like most people, Im not always as hyper-aware of my diabetes as I should be. While I feel like I have pretty decent control, there are times when my diabetes takes the back seat to graduate school, my friends, my workout routineYou get the picture.

As most PWDs are aware, it doesnt matter if things are in control most of the time we still suffer the consequences of the small fraction of time when they arent.

For me, when my busy life gets in the way, I slack on my pump sites.

I admit it I sometimes dont change my infusion sites often enough, dont take the time to thoroughly disinfect them before applying or after taking them off, and I tend to use the same areas of my body ALL the time. Cue the looks of disapproval.

Because the two seconds it would take to apply some anti-biotic cream to my pump sites is obviously too much of my precious time, I have a nice collection of little red bumps in the most-used areas of my body.

I am working on being better at this disinfecting my sites before and after use, applying antibiotic cream, and rotating where I put my infusion sets. But the red reminders that I was lazy remain.

The Forum for Injection Technique UK published the 3rd edition of its Injection Technique Recommendations in 2015. Since then, the guidelines have underpinned clinical and education practice in this area of diabetes care and education.

The assessment of the abdomen or other injection site/s helps to pick-up any lumps and bumps from repeated insulin injections into the same areas. Its called lipohypertrophy, and is a common cause of unstable diabetes. Insulin is a growth hormone and it creates an over production of scarred tissue where the insulin sits under the skin. Insulin absorption then differs, depending on whether or not it is injected into the area of lipohypertrophy.

People inject into the same places because they either havent been taught how to significantly rotate their injection sites, have forgotten or like the fact it doesnt hurt when injecting into the scarred tissue.

The insulin dose then needs to rise in order to be effective in the scarred tissue. Dosing into non-scarred areas, can cause significant hypoglycaemia as the dose works too effectively when away from the scar tissue.

Ive increased the rate of injection site review I do in people with diabetes who inject their medication and have been surprised at how many people have these lumps and bumps. Many will be found either side of the belly button, indicating a pattern of injecting that moves from one side to the other, limiting the rotation of sites.

The Pros And Cons Of Having An Insulin Pump

There are several treatment options to choose from while combating diabetes mellitus. They vary according to the patients physiological and metabolic needs.

However, if you are someone who is trying to get rid of your insulin pump then you must consider the pros and cons of it.

• Fewer needles would be necessary as you will be changing the needle only while changing your infusion set every few days.
• The accuracy level is higher than you administering the insulin shot yourself. There is a lower risk of overdosing or underdosing.
• It is much more convenient to maintain a bolus amount of insulin.

• Do not inject insulin into areas where you have a wound or bruising. Insulin injected into wounds or bruises may not get into your body correctly. Do not inject insulin through your clothes. Injecting through clothes can contaminate the needle and may cause an infection.
• Use a different area within the site each time you inject insulin. For example, inject insulin into different areas in your abdomen. Insulin injected into the same area can cause lumps, swelling, or thickened skin.

How To Get Rid Of Skin Growths

Because skin growths tend to grow and get thicker over time, its best to have them removed early on while theyre still manageable. Always have them checked and removed by a dermatologist, dont try to get rid of them yourself. In my experience, some dermatologists may not want to remove benign growths since they arent life-threatening. If this is the case, you may need to insist on having them removed by explaining to your doctor that you dont want raised bumps on your face. You may also want to have your doctor remove just one to see how your skin heals before getting more of them removed. The method of removal will depend on the type of growth, but common methods include cryotherapy,electric cauterization and manual removal with a scalpel.

What Does A Diabetes Rash Look Like

Diabetes rashes look different depending on the type and cause.

Some diabetes rashes only affect people with diabetes. They usually go away when blood sugar is under control. These rashes include:

• Blisters : Painless blisters may form on the backs of hands and feet and on the legs and forearms. This rare condition most often affects people who have diabetic neuropathy.
• Diabetes dermopathy: Light-brown, round-shaped scaly patches, like age spots, appear on the shins. These harmless spots dont need treatment.
