Should You Avoid Fried Foods with Diabetes?

Theres a definite link between diabetes and fried foods. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, a diet high in fried foods increases the risk of several health problems, including type 2 diabetes. Not only that, but they can also contribute to the risk factors of developing diabetes down the road. That includes increased blood pressure, weight gain and cholesterol levels. For this reason, its best to avoid or severely restrict fried foods if you have diabetes.

Why Are Fried Foods Bad for Diabetes?

Fried foods tend to be loaded with simple carbohydrates, due to the breading that is used to coat many of them to make them crispy and crunchy.

Simple carbs can cause a spike in blood sugar levels so you should be restricting them in favor of complex carbs. At the same time, fried foods are high in fat. Fat digest slowly so it could cause a blood sugar spike that lasts for several hours.

Since fried foods are also high in fat calories, they increase the risk of weight gain, which can complicate your diabetes and increase the risk of heart disease.

Which Fried Foods to Avoid

In general, you want to avoid all fried foods if you have diabetes. However, the worst fried foods for diabetes are those cooked in trans fat.

Fried foods in restaurants also tend to be an unhealthy choice because the oil is used for more than one item and that can expose you to other unhealthy ingredients.

Sams Story: Whats So Hard About Diabetes

Sam was diagnosed with diabetes 16 years ago. He took pills for years and resisted going on insulin for a long time. When we spoke, he was taking NPH and fast-acting insulin twice daily, using a sliding scale to determine the dose it didnt matter what he had eaten.

Sam only checked his blood glucose twice daily. He said his A1C once got down to 8%, but he recently had several weeks of blood sugars way off the range. He later clarified that he meant over 300 mg/dL for weeks straight . Sam had already developed some kidney problems and, more recently, issues with his feet. Hes only in his 40s.

I love fried chicken and eat it every single day, Sam told me. He later added that he frequently drinks regular soda, snacks on chips, and eats too many sweets. Sam also said he likes salads and knows he should eat them more often.

Exercise is also difficult Sam is overweight and drives a cab for 1014 hours per day, leaving little time for movement. Sometimes, he works late nights and sleeps most of the day. He loves basketball and used to play a lot, but now he says its too painful to run down the court.

Sams insurance is through the Kaiser Permanente managed care organization, and he does see his primary care doctor regularly. A pharmacist mostly helps him with his diabetes and insulin doses, often by phone. At a recent appointment, Sams primary care doctor didnt even realize he was on insulinand he had been taking insulin for 2 years!

Then I ran out of time.
