Is Orange Juice Good For Low Blood Sugar

Orange Juice And Inflammation

Orange Juice – Good or Bad?

Inflammation is another debatable area. Here too, the various compounds in orange juice can potentially help to decrease inflammation, which may then lower your risk of some diseases.

Youll even see oranges and orange juice included in some lists of anti-inflammatory foods. But, theres still the same problem here the sugar. Sugar is one of the worst culprits for inflammation.

Few studies have directly looked at whether orange juice increases or decreases inflammation, so we dont know how the pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory features balance out. But, even if orange juice does lower inflammation, there are plenty of better anti-inflammatory foods out there.

In fact, oranges themselves are a more powerful choice for decreasing inflammation and boosting your immune system. You get much more fiber when you choose to focus on the whole fruit.

Plus, it takes longer to eat a whole orange than to chug a glass of orange juice, so theres less risk that youll overdo it.

Orange Juice And Champagne

Also known as a mimosa, this cocktail remains a classic with minimal effort. Its easy enough to make for crowds but doesnt call for an occasion. Its simplicity means you can unwind with a glass, or have it with a friend. And besides the bubbly visual, sparkling wine is a piquant contrast to the sweet orange, yet marries it well.

Ingredients

  • 2-4 cups orange juice, chilled

Instructions

  • Pour sparkling wine into a champagne glass until it reaches halfway
  • Fill the rest of the glass with orange and serve cool.

    How To Treat It

If you have hypoglycemia, you need to have food or a drink that is a fast-acting carbohydrate. Good sources include fruit juice, regular soda, glucose tablets, or glucose gel. A good rule of thumb is to eat or drink 15 grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, and then test your blood again. If your blood glucose is still lower than 70 mg/dl, take another 15 grams and test again 15 minutes later. Although you may feel like you want to eat more, be aware that eating too much can send your glucose too high.

    CARBS IN A HURRY

There are about 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrate in:

    • 4 ounces of juice or soda

    • 8 ounces of skim milk

    • 56 Life Savers candies

If you use glucose tabs or gel, check the package, because doses vary from brand to brand.

A person who passes out from hypoglycemia should not be given food or drink. Instead, he or she needs a shot of glucagon. If your health care provider thinks that you may be at risk of a severe low, you will be given a prescription for a glucagon kit, which you should have with you at all times. Your friends, family, and other people around you, like a coworker or coach, will need to learn how to give you a glucagon shot if you are unable to treat yourself. If you have a severe low and glucagon is not available, someone must call 911.

My Stage 3 Adrenal Fatigue Recovery Story

When I first transitioned to the online model a few years ago, it was like working two full-time jobs for about a year. I was running a full private practice and managing a team, building two TV shows, and building an entirely new set of online courses and a brand new business model.

I get tired just thinking about it.

That time period in my life depleted most of the cortisol I had in my poor adrenal glands and I had hit a wall called stage III adrenal exhaustion.

Insomnia, tired but wired, kind of depressed and a little bit anxious most of the time for no reason, no appetite, and no energy to exercise or do the things I usually enjoy.

If youve ever experienced adrenal exhaustion, you know it can take its toll on every aspect of your life.

So I sought out help and support to keep me accountable as I pulled myself out of this chronic stress cycle.

I worked with Jeanne Rubin at East West Healing and Performance because I really liked her approach to heal a broken metabolism using only food, hardly any supplements and no lab work. I already knew what supplements to take and what my lab values were, I just needed to put myself first for a little while and to focus on using food as my medicine 6 times a day, every time I ate.

Only when I got past our first launch of our three-month online nutrition program and closed my private practice did the external stressors let up.

This is why The Adrenal Healing Creamsicle that Jeanne recommended to me literally saved me .

    What Is Low Blood Glucose

Low blood glucose, also called low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, occurs when the level of glucose in your blood drops below what is healthy for you. For many people with diabetes, this means a blood glucose reading lower than 70 milligrams per deciliter .1 Your number might be different, so check with your doctor or health care team to find out what blood glucose level is low for you.

Reach For A Whole Juicy Orange For Vitamin C

An orange is an excellent source of pectin, a soluble fiber that has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels, Smithson says. Although they’re sweet, oranges are actually low on the glycemic index , according to the American Diabetes Association . And the lower a food’s GI, the less it affects blood sugar and insulin levels. Do factor in that one medium-size orange has 15 grams of carbohydrates, Smithson notes.

Oranges provide other key nutrients, including vitamin C. Opt for the whole fruit instead of juice for more fiber and antioxidants that may help prevent cell damage, she adds, as well as decrease any effect on blood sugar.

Is Orange Juice Good For The Flu

Is Orange Juice Really A Healthy Energy Drink?

To some extent, yes. It is not a magic cure-all. So note that orange juice is not a remedy for the flu or cold. Though it reduces symptoms by 85%, its only in experimental megadoses of 1000mg of vitamin C. Over 13 times the RDI!

However, incorporating it into your diet helps to boost your immune system over time. Its like building blocks. A cup serving of orange juice contains 124 mg of vitamin C, which is well over 100% RDI. By giving the vitamin C time to strengthen your defenses, you can perhaps reduce the duration of a cold.

    Coffee And Tea In Moderation

There is a debate about coffee intake for people with diabetes.

In 2004, scientists who carried out a review concluded that coffee consumption may have undesired short-term effects, yet long-term coffee drinking shows some benefits.

However, in 2017, other researchers concluded that âfive of the seven studies suggest caffeine intake increases blood glucose levels and prolongs the period of high blood glucose levels.â

Further research is needed to find out exactly how caffeine affects blood sugar levels.

In addition, barista coffees might also contain flavored creamers and syrups that contain high levels of sugar.

    How To Make Orange Juice

Traditional methods of making orange juice have evolved its hard to select the best one. But you dont have to. The best way to make juice depends on personal preference. Do you like yours pulpy? Use a reamer prefer it chunky? Blend away. Smooth? Strain it. Your taste tells you your method.

That said, there are three main ways to make this juice: blending, electric, and manual juicing. All three are quick and easy to follow. And freshly-squeezed juice tastes even better, is purer, and the only additives in there are what you choose.

    Overdose Of Diabetes Medication

A common cause of hypoglycaemia is taking too much insulin for your current needs. Insulin is a medication that helps control your blood glucose levels. It’s commonly used to treat type 1 diabetes and is also recommended for some people with type 2 diabetes.

A fall in blood glucose levels can also occur after taking too much oral hypoglycaemia medication, such as sulphonylurea, which causes a release of insulin. This medication is often used to lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

Can You Raise Blood Sugar Without Food

    Managing Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

Two products glucose gel and chewable glucose tablets are also effective at quickly raising blood sugar. Theyre available without a prescription and are recommended for people who experience frequent episodes of low blood sugar.

If youve had severe low blood sugar symptoms in the past, speak with your doctor about whether a glucagon kit is right for you. Glucagon is a hormone that triggers your liver to release glucose into the bloodstream.

These kits are only available by prescription. Theyre used to raise your blood sugar when youre not able to eat or drink, such as in a state of unconsciousness. Therefore, someone else, like a friend or family member, typically administers this medication for you.

An episode of low blood sugar that necessitates assistance from another person is by definition severe hypoglycemia. The kits come with a syringe and needle that can be used to inject glucagon into your arm, thigh, or buttocks.

Be sure to ask your doctor when and how to use a glucagon kit. Also, let your family and friends know how to use it and how to recognize a hypoglycemic emergency.

There are many different factors that can cause a dip in your blood sugar levels. Here are some of the most common causes.

    Is Orange Juice Healthy

Yes, it is. And drinking it is an excellent way to obtain vital nutrients in a single serving. In addition to providing 165% RDI of vitamin C, a cup of pure orange contains 10% RDI of potassium. In turn, high potassium intake lowers blood pressure, which leads to lower stroke risk.

Orange juice is also anti-inflammatory. So consuming it may help prevent chronic diseases. Moreover, it nourishes through phytonutrients that may benefit heart health and inhibit cancer growth. Long term consumption of orange juice is linked to lower cholesterol levels. So it might be a brilliant idea to drink it more frequently.

Orange Juice And Blood Glucose Levels

In recent years, studies around100% orange juice and blood glucose levels have demonstrated a decreased fasting glucose following consumption,19 or no effect on blood glucose or insulin.20,21,31 A recent study in overweight and obese adults at risk for diabetes showed that 100% orange juice was not different than water on blood glucose or insulin responses when consumed with a meal, even though the orange juice group consumed higher total carbohydrates.32 Even adults drinking high amounts of 100% orange juice beyond what is recommended for two to three months had no changes in markers of glucose metabolism.22,23 Furthermore, in a cross-over intervention study, consumption of soda resulted in a higher daylong glycemia, higher blood glucose variability, and lower insulin secretion compared to 100% orange juice even though the beverages were matched for sugar content. This study suggests glucose metabolism is different with added-sugar beverages than with 100% orange juice.33 A small acute study in healthy young women reported no difference in glucose or insulin response when comparing consumption of raw oranges with 100% orange juice or 100% orange juice sweetened naturally with nectar , suggesting that orange juice had no differential glucose or insulin response compared to whole fruit.34

    Pure Fruit Juice In Moderation

Pure fruit juices are appropriate, but since fruit juice delivers the sugar from the fruit but not necessarily the fiber as well, people with diabetes should consume these types of drinks in small amounts.

They will also need to account for any juices in a meal plan. For example, one 248-gram cup of fresh, unprocessed orange juice contains nearly 26 g of carbohydrate, of which almost 21 g is sugar.

Portion size is a key factor to managing carbohydrate intake when drinking juice with a meal. Drinking juice alone can lead to a blood sugar spike, but consuming it with other foods, particularly protein or a healthful fat can help to prevent this.

Eating fruit can be a good way to quench thirst, and it delivers more nutritional benefit than juice.
