How To Gain Weight With Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes Diet Plan

How to Gain Weight With a Diabetic Diet

According to the American Diabetes Association , a Mediterranean-style diet, a plant-based diet, and a diet known as Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension are all good starting points for a type 2 diabetes meal plan that can be modified to accommodate your personal eating preferences.

These diet approaches have two important factors in common: mostly whole foods, and meals built around vegetables rather than carbohydrates .

However, contrary to popular belief, a type 2 diabetes meal plan is not necessarily a low-carb diet, nor should it be a high-protein or very low-fat meal plan. In fact, ADA recommends less emphasis on specific requirements for proteins, carbs, and fats, and more emphasis on following a whole foods approach that focuses on the quality of your diet the less processed, refined, prepared, and fast foods focused, the better. Making a move towards eating more home-cooked meals may seem daunting, but just takes a little planning, especially with resources like the ADA’s Diabetes Food Hub.

An RD or CDE can look at your usual diet and help you identify where theres room for improvement, Ms. Arevalo suggests. These diet experts can also help you create a diabetes diet plan tailored to your personal needs and food preferences.

Eat Three Meals A Day

Dont skip meals. If you are trying to gain weight, you need to increase your daily caloric intake. If you skip breakfast , you could be missing out on an extra 400 to 500 calories per day, which if done consistently could lead to a one-pound weight loss per week. So, even if you are not a breakfast person, find some foods that you can eat for breakfast, such as a fruit-vegetable smoothie . A quick smoothie could be a few handfuls of spinach, 1 cup frozen berries, ½ banana, 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 tablespoon ground flax seed and ½-1 cup coconut milk. Serve the smoothie with a side of egg and chicken sausage. You might also try an egg, cheese, and avocado sandwich on a low-carb wrap or tortilla.

Hypos Hunger And Weight Gain

Insulin has additional problems for weight management. If insulin causes blood glucose levels to go too low , it can leave with you a strong feeling of hunger

The best response to strong hunger or increased appetite is to raise blood glucose levels as quickly and efficiently as possible as once sugar levels are back to normal, the cravings should cease.

If you tend to overeat in response to low blood sugar, its advisable to stick strictly to having only glucose tablets or another fast acting form of sugar to treat hypos and not give in to temptation to eat other foods, such as those containing protein or fat, when or following treatment for a hypo

The Importance Of A Healthy Weight

When kids with diabetes reach and maintain a healthy weight, they feel better and have more energy. Their diabetes symptoms decrease and their blood sugar levels are better controlled. They also may be less likely to develop complications from diabetes, like heart disease.

Doctors use body mass index to determine if a person’s weight is healthy. If your doctor recommends that your child lose weight to control diabetes, a weight management plan can hel. Even if your child’s BMI is in the healthy range, the doctor can help you come up with a healthy meal and exercise plan.

What If I Have High Cholesterol

What Can A Diabetic Eat To Gain Weight

Select vegetable fats that are low in saturated fat, such as olive oil, canola oil, soft margarine and mayonnaise. Talk with your dietitian about how to choose the best lean cuts of meat. Some examples are chicken, turkey, fish, pork tenderloin and eye of the round beef. It is important to remove all of the visible fat from meat and skin from poultry and to use only vegetable oils and fats in the cooking.

The yolk of the egg contains large amounts of cholesterol, but can be eaten a few times per week. The white of eggs contains no fat and is a very good source of protein. Speak with your dietitian about using these foods in your diet.

Reason #: With Type 2 Diabetes Insulin Is High And Insulin Is A Fat

Everyone has glucose, a type of sugar, in their blood at all times. Glucose is a source of energy that largely comes from eating carbohydrates. Simply put, when you eat carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises.

Insulin is produced by your pancreas, and insulin has many functions in the body. One of insulinâs functions is to help get glucose out of the blood and into cells where it can be used. In order to do this, insulin rises along with glucose. So when you eat carbohydrates and glucose rises, the insulin is rising as well. Once in the cells, glucose is mostly used for energy. If you have type 2 diabetes, this process doesnât work well anymore: your body has become resistant to the signal of insulin, so the insulin isnât as effective at moving the glucose out of your blood. Thatâs how you end up with high blood sugar levels after eating carbohydrates. Having chronically elevated blood sugar levels is dangerous, so your body needs to do something about it.

Your body responds by making more and more insulin to try to get the job done. Recall now that insulin has many functions, not just to facilitate the removal of glucose from the blood. Insulin also works to promote the storage of fat and to block the release of fat from fat storage. So instead of losing weight, you just keep gaining, thanks to all that insulin.

Keep Blood Sugar Levels Steady And Even

Big swings in blood sugar can lead to weight gain, so the best approach is to try to keep levels steady, says McClain. When blood sugar is low, you get a signal that youre really hungry. In this situation, we teach people to have a snack containing 15 grams of carbohydrate, to bring their sugar level up. People who tend to have frequent drops in their blood sugar may actually be overeating to treat these dips, which can lead to gaining weight, he adds.

Jensen says the goal to the extent you can manage it is to live in harmony with your insulin. You dont have to eat the same exact food every day, or do the exact same activities, but its a good idea to aim for some regularity so your levels arent swinging around wildly from day to day. Thats what can get people into trouble, he says.

Diabetes And Your Weight

When someone has diabetes, his or her body doesn’t use glucose properly. Glucose, a sugar, is the main source of energy for the body. Glucose comes from the foods we eat. Glucose levels are controlled in the body by a hormone called insulin , which is made in the pancreas.

Most people are overweight when they first find out they have type 2 diabetes. The extra weight can make it harder for their bodies to use insulin. That’s why people who have type 2 diabetes will be encouraged to get to a healthy weight by eating right and getting regular exercise. Exercise not only burns calories, but it can also help the body use insulin. This makes it easier to keep blood sugar levels on track.

Being at a healthy weight makes it less likely that someone will get type 2 diabetes. And if someone already has type 2 diabetes, losing weight can make their diabetes easier to manage and can even reduce the amount of medicine they need.

With type 1, kids may have the opposite problem weight loss. Before they know they have type 1 diabetes, kids may lose weight because their bodies can’t use glucose properly. Once someone knows they have type 1 diabetes and gets treatment, he or she usually gets back to a healthy weight.

It’s also possible a kid with type 1 diabetes might be overweight. If so, the extra weight can make it hard to keep blood sugar levels under control.

Why Type 2 Diabetes Can Cause Weight Loss

One of the early signs of type 2 diabetes is unplanned weight loss and not just a pound or two. Unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more in a short period of time is cause for concern, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The culprit? Insulin resistance.

“If the body is not able to sensitize insulin, meaning it’s not taking glucose from the blood and into the cells to be used as energy, the body will need to find an alternative energy source. It may then turn to utilizing fat and/or muscle as its energy source,” explains Maya Feller, RD, CDN, a dietitian who specializes in nutrition for chronic disease prevention. “The net effect is unintentional weight loss.”

Feller notes, though, that this is more common when someone has type 1 diabetes.
