Once youre in the groove of logging and tracking carbs, dont forget to make time to plan meals ahead so you can avoid high-carb foods and prevent those annoying french fry cravings.

    Although studies have shown that many different levels of carb intake may help control blood sugar, the optimal amount varies by individual.

    The American Diabetes Association used to recommend that people with diabetes get around 45% of their calories from carbs.

    However, the ADA now promotes an individualized approach in which your ideal carb intake should take into account your dietary preferences and metabolic goals .

    Its important to eat the number of carbs at which you feel best and can realistically maintain in the long term.

    Therefore, figuring out how many carbs to eat requires some testing and evaluating to find out what works best for you.

    To determine your ideal carb intake, measure your blood sugar with a blood glucose meter before a meal and again 12 hours after eating.

    How Many Added Sugars Are Right For You

    Keep an eye on added sugars in packaged foods, which can be the biggest culprit when it comes to empty carbs.

    The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, jointly published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recommend that no more than 10% of calories come from added sugar:

    Specifically, that looks like:

    • No more than 6 teaspoons or 25 grams of added sugar for adult women without diabetes
    • No more than 9 teaspoons or 37.5 grams of added sugar for adult men without diabetes

    Other expert groups, including the American Heart Association , recommend a lower limit of daily sugar intake. AHA specifically recommends that no more than 6% of daily calories from from added sugars.

    There are no current recommendations for added sugars for adults with diabetes. If you have diabetes, work with your care provider and dietitian, nutritionist, or CDE to determine the daily amount of added sugar that’s right for you.

    Theres no one size fits all answereveryone is different because everyones body is different. The amount you can eat and stay in your target blood sugar range depends on your age, weight, activity level, and other factors.

    On average, people with diabetes should aim to get about half of their calories from carbs. That means if you normally eat about 1,800 calories a day to maintain a healthy weight, about 800 to 900 calories can come from carbs. At 4 calories per gram, thats 200225 carb grams a day. Try to eat about the same amount of carbs at each meal to keep your blood sugar levels steady throughout the day .

They didn’t focus on carbs. Both studies showed that people who lost weight-and kept it off-experienced numerous health benefits over the years. Both studies also encouraged physical activity almost every day.

    Joslin also recommends 60-90 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days of the week. This includes both cardio and strength training. Muscle burns calories, so if you’re only doing cardio, consider upping the resistance training to get more calorie burn throughout the day.

    It does vary some from person to person. But overall your goal is to keep your carbohydrate intake to less than 130 grams per day, which is considered the top threshold for a low carb diet.

    Still, although anything below 130 grams is considered low carb, and its a good place to start, 130 grams is not that low.

    Research shows that if you can eat even fewer carbs, youll get even better results:

    What weve found works well for our members is to consume around 50 to 80 grams of total carbs per day. Yes, thats 50-80 g maximum carbs per day!

    So, when you start carb counting, if you were calculating net carbs , youd be consuming around 30 to 50 net carbs per day.

    And if you do this, youll be seeing great improvements!

    If you have diabetes, your doctor will probably advise that you eat less sugar than the AHAs recommendations. With a typical diet, you can quickly reach your sugar limit at breakfast. A pastry and a couple of cups of sweetened coffee will likely be above whats safe for you.
